Bucknell at a Glance
- Two teams battling for postseason positioning get together when Bucknell visits Boston University on Saturday. The Bison are looking to bounce back from a home loss to No. 18/19 Army, while the Terriers will be trying to shake a three-game losing streak after spending the first month of the season in the national rankings.
- Loyola sits atop the Patriot League standings at 4-1 after beating Boston University 19-11 last Saturday, and it's a jumbled mess after that with the next six teams separated by just one game. Boston University, Army, and Navy are all 3-2, Bucknell and Colgate are 3-3, and Lehigh is in seventh place at 2-3. The top six make the Patriot League Tournament, with the top two receiving byes into the semifinal round.
- Other Patriot League games this weekend feature Lehigh at Colgate (Friday), Loyola at Lafayette, and Navy at Army.
- Bucknell still has Boston University (away), and Holy Cross (home) on the schedule. With nine men's lacrosse teams in the Patriot League, one is always relegated to non-conference action in each game week, and Bucknell's "bye" this year falls on the last weekend of the regular season. The Bison will play UMBC in a neutral-site game at Messiah College on Friday, Apr. 24, and they will be pushing to have a postseason spot secured by then.
- On the heels of the dramatic 14-13 overtime win over Lafayette, Bucknell could not pull off a similar comeback against Army last week. The Bison trailed 7-2 at the half and 11-5 early in the fourth quarter before getting back in the game with a three-goal flurry. Bucknell had been in control of the faceoff game up that point, but the Black Knights won three in a row and added a couple of empty-net goals to finish off a 14-8 win.
- Army features one of the nation's top defenses, and Bucknell was held to single-digit goals for the first time all season. The previous low was 11 goals in an 11-2 win over St. Bonaventure in the second game of the season. The Bison rank third in the league in goals per game at 12.45, just a tick below Boston University at 12.60. Navy leads the league with 13.82 gpg.
- On the defensive side, Bucknell is third in the league with an 11.15 team goals-against average, while the Terriers are seventh at 11.89.
- Michael Meyer (31-14-45) has hit the 30-goal mark for the first time in his career, and he ranks fifth in the Patriot League in points and sixth in goals. Among the NCAA leaders, he is 21st in goals per game and seventh in man-up goals with five.
- Meyer had multiple points in every game this season until being held to just one goal against Army. He had a six-goal game against Robert Morris and a six-assist outing against Colgate. Meyer and Boston University's Timothy Shannehan are the only two players in the country to have both a six-goal and a six-assist game this season.
- Meyer, who assisted on Huber's OT goal last week against Lafayette, has surpassed the 150-point mark in his career (88-69-157). He is now ninth on Bucknell's career points list and tied for eighth with Jim Morris on the career assists chart. He needs nine more goals to jump into the top 10 on that chart and 12 to become the eighth 100-goal scorer in team history.
- Fellow senior attackman Owen Kovacs (20-6-25) scored a career-high five goals in the win over Colgate and has 10 goals in the last four games. Kovacs missed his first two seasons due to injury and then broke out with 19 goals in 2025. He has already surpassed that total this season.
- Bucknell has nine double-digit point-producers thus far. In addition to Meyer and Kovacs, Luke Brunner (17-9-26), Peter Grandolfo (19-7-26), Sean Berrigan (14-11-25), Sean Murray (10-11-21), Hans Huber (7-8-15), Anthony Panetti (7-7-15), and Will Hopkins (5-7-12) have all hit double figures. Berrigan and Brunner have surpassed their career scoring highs.
- Berrigan (16), Kovacs (16), Meyer (13), and Brunner (12) have all registered a point in every game this season and have point streaks that date back to 2025.
- Colin McLoy has been named Patriot League Faceoff Specialist of the Week twice this season. He is converting at a 55.8% clip on the season fifth-best in the Patriot League and 29th nationally. McLoy won nine of his last 11 draws against Lafayette to help spark the second-half comeback.
- Bucknell has used two senior goalies this season. Jaz Zanelli has made seven starts and has a .446 save percentage and a 10.04 GAA. Luke Renaud has started four games and has a .398 save percentage and 13.22 GAA. Zanelli scored his first career goal on a 60-yard shot against Lafayette's 10-man ride, and he also has an assist on a Jack Tully goal earlier in the year.
- The Bison have done a solid job protecting the ball and rank 10th nationally in fewest turnovers per game at 14.0. They committed a season-low nine giveaways at Loyola.
- Bucknell has committed only nine penalties in the last five games, and five of those came in the Lafayette game. The Bison were not penalized at all in the Navy game and just once against Colgate and Army. Staying out of the box will be important this week against a Boston University team that leads the league and ranks eighth nationally in EMO efficiency at 48.6%. The Terriers went 7-for-9 with a man advantage in last year's game at Bucknell.
- The St. Bonaventure win on Feb. 6 was the 400th in program history. The team's inaugural season came in 1968.
- Frank Fedorjaka is in his 21st season as head coach at Bucknell, and he is joined on the staff by defensive coordinator Kyle Gallagher, offensive coordinator Matt Kerwick, and new assistant coach Jackson Mumford.
- The Terriers were rolling along at 3-0 in Patriot League play after beating Navy (15-10), Lehigh (14-13 OT), and Army (10-8), but they have suddenly dropped three straight at Colgate (14-12), Harvard (14-11), and Loyola (19-11) to drop back to .500 on the season and 3-2 in the Patriot League.
- Boston University has played a tough non-league schedule, with losses to Syracuse, Yale, and Harvard along with wins over Dartmouth and Siena. The Terriers are 4-1 at home and 1-4 on the road.
- Last time out, Loyola outscored Boston University 7-0 in the first quarter and led 12-1 early in the third, and the Terriers could never recover.
- The Terriers are not afraid to let it fly, as they lead the league in shots per game with 47.5. Bucknell is second at 44.8.
- Bucknell will have to be organized in the clearing game this week against a Boston side that leads the nation in lowest opponent clear percentage (.702), ground balls per game (38.3), and caused turnovers per game (12.5).
- Timothy Shannehan (28-24-52) leads the league and ranks third nationally in points per game with 5.20. His 2.40 assists per game are also the most in the PL and ninth-most nationally. Shannehan was the 2025 Patriot League Rookie of the Year and a First Team All-PL selection after posting 32 goals and 29 assists. Shannehan, teammate Tyler Fox, and Bucknell's Peter Grandolfo were teammates at Fairfield Prep.
- Jimmy Kohr (28-4-32), Peyton Forte (21-7-28), and Andrew Pape (11-6-17) are other top scorers.
- Boston University has a strong faceoff man in Madden Murphy, who converts at a 56.9%.
- Connor Phillips has started all 10 games in goal and has a .498 save percentage and 11.48 GAA.
- Bucknell is 4-8 against the Terriers in a series that dates back to 2014. The Bison won four of the first five meetings, but Boston University has taken the last seven.
- Two of Boston University's wins are in Patriot League Tournament play, both in the quarterfinal round. The Terriers won 12-11 in Lewisburg in 2018 and 14-8 in Boston in 2019.
- Last season, Boston University went 7-for-9 on EMO and won 21-12 at Christy Mathewson-Memorial Stadium. Timothy Shannehan tallied four goals and five assists, and Jimmy O'Connell, Jimmy Kohr also scored four goals. Connor Davis led the Bison with three goals, and Owen Kovacs had two goals and an assist. The Terriers led 8-5 at the half and then broke it open with three straight goals to start the second half.
- Bucknell's last series win was a 16-9 verdict in the 2018 regular season. The Bison trailed that game 9-6 late in the second quarter before finishing the game on a 10-0 run. Will Sands led Bucknell with 10 points on three goals and seven assists. It was the opposite story in the rematch in the postseason, as Bucknell led 11-6 in the third quarter before the Terriers scored the game's final six goals.
- Bucknell returns home to host Holy Cross on Senior Day on Saturday, Apr. 18. The 11 a.m. game is the first half of a lax doubleheader, as the Bison women host Boston University at 3 p.m.
