Matt Kerwick, a veteran of more than 30 years as a lacrosse coach at the collegiate level, has joined Frank Fedorjaka's staff as an assistant coach in 2025. Kerwick's extensive resume includes successful head coaching stints at Cornell, Jacksonville, Hobart, Alfred, and Randolph-Macon, where he combined to win 136 games, and he is one of just a handful of coaches to lead three different Division I teams to the NCAA Tournament.
A 1990 Hobart graduate, where he was a lacrosse teammate of Fedorjaka, Kerwick was a two-time All-American, won four straight Division III national championships, and was named MVP of the 1989 NCAA Tournament. He was also a standout defenseman on the Statesmen hockey team, and he received the William C. Stiles Award, presented to the Hobart senior student-athlete for leadership, determination and character. Following his collegiate career, he played in the Major Indoor Lacrosse League from 1991 through 1996, earning the Baltimore Thunder's "Unsung Hero" award twice, and he was an All- Star selection in 1992.
"I am honored to have Matt Kerwick join my staff," said Fedorjaka. "Matt has been a winner at every program and at every level in which he's coached. He was the Division III National Coach of the Year, helped Georgetown and Cornell to top-4 national rankings, won a championship at the professional level, and coached with the U.S. National Team. Matt is highly regarded as one of the best offensive minds in the game. He will be helping out in all phases of the game here at Bucknell."
Kerwick began his coaching career as the head coach at Randolph-Macon in 1992. He revived the men's lacrosse program, leading the Yellow Jackets to a 27-14 record, which were the three most successful seasons in team history at the time. Kerwick spent one season as an assistant coach at Penn before returning to the head coaching ranks at Alfred. There, he guided the Saxons to postseason berths in each of his three seasons, and in 1997 he was named the Babe Kraus Division III Coach of the Year.
After three seasons as an assistant coach at Georgetown, Kerwick returned to his alma mater and spent seven seasons as the head coach at Hobart. He guided the Statesmen to the 2002 Patriot League championship while earning PL Coach of the Year honors, and his teams made NCAA Tournament appearances in 2002 and 2004.
Kerwick was named the ECAC Coach of the Year in 2008, and then in 2009, he moved on to Jacksonville, where he helped launch the school's men's lacrosse program. Jacksonville played its inaugural season in 2010. In 2012, Kerwick returned to Georgetown as associate head coach, and then after one season as an assistant at Cornell, he was elevated to head coach in 2014. Kerwick's first Big Red squad started 9-0, and he captured back-to-back Ivy League championships in 2014 and 2015.
Kerwick also has international coaching experience, as he was an assistant coach on the U.S. Men's Lacrosse National Team that won the silver medal at the FIL World Championships.
One of Kerwick's pupils at Bucknell is his son, Sean Kerwick, who is a freshman attacker on this year's squad.
