Men’s Lax Drops Overtime Battle at Boston University, 13-12
4/11/2026 6:35:00 PM | Men's Lacrosse
BOSTON, Mass. – Timothy Shannehan scored on the first possession of overtime to send Boston University past Bucknell 13-12 in Patriot League men's lacrosse action at Nickerson Stadium on Saturday. Owen Kovacs scored four goals, and Michael Meyer and Sean Berrigan both had two goals and two assists for the Bison, who fell to 7-5 overall and 3-4 in the Patriot League.
It was a tale of two halves, as the two teams combined for 19 goals in the second half but only five in the second, when the defenses tightened up and both backup goalies made one big save after another.
Down 10-9 at the half and 11-9 after Andrew Pape scored in the opening two minutes of the third quarter, Bucknell battled back to tie the game on two different occasions. Sean Murray got one back for the Bison at the 9:10 mark of the third quarter, and then Hans Huber capped off a long possession with a shot on the run to make it 11-11 with 12:24 to go in the fourth.
The Bison had several chances to take the lead, but the Terriers defense came up with two big takeaways. They scored in transition on the second one, with Peyton Forte finishing a Shannehan feed for a 12-11 lead with 6:50 remaining.
Luke Renaud, who was outstanding in relief, made two tough saves on low shots to keep it a one-goal game, and then Anthony Panetti tied it with 1:46 to go. The sophomore middie entered on a mid-possession substitution, took the ball near midfield and finished a long run down the right alley with a shot through the legs of the goalie.
Boston University's Madden Murphy won the ensuing faceoff – a common theme all day – but he took this ground ball going back toward his own goal. Bucknell forced a turnover on the clear and regained possession with exactly 80 seconds remaining. The Bison played for the final shot and got a great look when Meyer hit a cutting Berrigan on the crease, but his quick-stick attempt was saved by Michael Allieri with 12 seconds on the clock.
Murphy won the overtime faceoff, and after a timeout, Shannehan rolled to the front and snuck a shot inside the post to win it for the Terriers (6-5, 4-2 PL). Shannehan, a Mid-Season All-American who is the reigning Patriot League Rookie of the Year, finished with two goals and four assists.
Bucknell's starting attack trio combined for eight goals and four assists, all coming in a wild first half when it seemed as if every shot found the back of the net. The Bison shot 9-for-20 and the Terriers 10-for-18 in the first half. But Renaud stopped six shots and Allieri 11 over the final 30 minutes.
Bucknell outshot Boston University 41-35 and forced 20 turnovers on a day when the Terriers won 24 of the 28 faceoffs. Murphy went 20-for-25 with 11 ground balls and also scored a first-half goal.
Neither team led by more than two goals all day, and the game was tied on nine different occasions. Bucknell battled back from two-goal deficits three times but fell one short against a team that has been nationally ranked for most of the season.
Despite dropping two straight to Army and Boston University, the Bison are still very much in the postseason hunt. The top six teams qualify for the Patriot League Tournament, and Bucknell is now in sole possession of sixth place. Holy Cross and Lehigh are a half-game behind at 2-4, and the Bison have already beaten the Mountain Hawks and host the Crusaders next Saturday in their final conference game of the regular season.
Bucknell and Holy Cross square off at 11 a.m. at Christy Mathewson-Memorial Stadium. It will be Senior Day and Alumni Day, with Bucknell's 1996, 2001, and 2011 championship teams set to be honored.
