Bucknell at a Glance
- Bucknell continues a busy stretch with its third game in eight days when Hobart pays a visit to Christy Mathewson-Memorial Stadium on Saturday morning. This will be the first of two lacrosse games in Christy, as the Bison women will follow against St. Bonaventure at 3 p.m.
- Bucknell improved to 3-1 on the season with a 16-8 road win at Iona on Tuesday. That was just a 5-3 game at the half, but the Bison scored the first six goals of the third quarter to break it open. Meanwhile, this will be just the third game of the season and the first road encounter for the Statesmen. Hobart opened with a 13-8 win over Canisius before falling 7-6 to Colgate last Saturday in a game that featured a combined 35 saves from the goalies.
- Bucknell head coach Frank Fedorjaka and assistant coach Matt Kerwick were standout players at Hobart in the 1980s. A 1989 Hobart graduate, Fedorjaka was a starting long-stick midfielder on three NCAA Division III national championship teams. He was also a three-year starter at wide receiver for the Statesman football team, earning All-America honors in 1988. The Rochester, N.Y., native was named Hobart's Athlete of the Year in 1989. During his career at Hobart, he held all reception records and remained the school's all-time leading receiver until 2004.
- A 1990 Hobart graduate, where he was a lacrosse teammate of Fedorjaka, Kerwick was a two-time All-American, won four straight Division III national championships, and was named MVP of the 1989 NCAA Tournament. He was also a standout defenseman on the Statesmen hockey team, and he received the William C. Stiles Award, presented to the Hobart senior student-athlete for leadership, determination, and character. Kerwick's son, Sean, is a sophomore on the Bison squad.
- Senior attackman has gotten hot with 10 goals in the last two games and 14 on the season. The 14 goals are second-most in the Patriot League, trailing only Lafayette's Benjamin Dibattista, and his 3.50 goals per game rank 17th nationally. Meyer matched his career high of six goals against Robert Morris last week.
- Sean Berrigan (7-5-12) and Luke Brunner (5-5-10) have also reached double -digit points, while Peter Grandolfo (9-0-9) is second on the team in goals with nine. Hans Huber (2-5-7) has made a strong return after missing all of last season with an injury.
- Junior Patrick Mullen scored his first two career goals and sophomore Crispin Kaye netted his first on Tuesday at Iona. Freshman Joey Matassa assisted on Kaye's goal for his first career point.
- Senior goalie Jaz Zanelli is third in the Patriot League and 14th nationally in goals-against average at 8.04. As a team, the Bison rank 18th nationally in scoring defense at 8.50 gpg. That figure is boosted by the 11-2 win over St. Bonaventure, which was Bucknell's lowest goals-against total since a 13-1 win over Lafayette on Apr. 11, 2014.
- The Bison dominated the faceoffs against Iona, winning 19 of 28. Colin McLoy started and won 10 of his first 14 before finishing 10-for-17 with nine ground balls. Zach Hepworth went 7-for-9 and Steven Pepe 2-for-2. For the season, McLoy is 30-for-48 (.625) and Hepworth is 29-for-49 (.592), and the team's .610 mark ranks 13th nationally.
- The St. Bonaventure win was the 400th in program history. The team's inaugural season came in 1968.
- Frank Fedorjaka is in his 21st season as head coach at Bucknell, and he is joined on the staff by defensive coordinator Kyle Gallagher, offensive coordinator Matt Kerwick, and new assistant coach Jackson Mumford.
- The Statesmen finished 5-9 last season, including a 2-3 mark in the Atlantic 10. Four of those losses came against ranked opponents.
- In Saturday's 7-6 loss to Colgate, shots were even at 42-42, but Raiders netminder Andrew Lehrman made 21 saves. Michael Johnson had 14 for Hobart, but Freddy Fowler's goal with 3:33 remaining won it for Colgate.
- Daniel Cano recorded three goals and an assist against Canisius and leads the team with four goals on the season. David Peterkin (1-4-5), Gordon Bennett (2-2-4), Connor DiTomasso (2-2-4), and Cade Dino (1-3-4) are other top scorers. Peterkin was a Preseason All-Atlantic 10 selection. He recorded 21 goals and 17 assists last season on the way to First Team All-A10 honors.
- No. 1 faceoff man Seamus Schofield is 18-for-30 (.600) on the season.
- Goalie Michael Johnson has a stellar .651 save percentage with 28 saves and only 15 goals against.
- Stephen Brundage is in his first season as Hobart's head coach after being promoted from associate head coach last June.
- Bucknell is 9-16 all-time against Hobart, which was a member of the Patriot League in men's lacrosse from 2000-04. Bucknell and Hobart shared Patriot League championships in 2000 and 2002.
- Hobart won the first seven meetings, all in the 1970s, before the Bison picked up a 12-8 victory on the way to an undefeated season in 1996.
- Last year, the two teams met for the first time since 2012, and Hobart erased a 12-9 fourth-quarter deficit and won 13-12 at Stiles Field. Connor Davis scored four goals and Michael Meyer had five assists for the Bison, who jumped out to a 4-1 advantage and led for most of the game until the Statesmen made their late run. Cade Dino scored the game-winning goal with 2:30 remaining, and Jackson Faiola made a save with three seconds remaining.
- The 2012 game was Hobart's most recent visit to Lewisburg. Todd Heritage scored eight goals on nine shots and Kyle Feeney made 13 saves to lead the Bison to a 14-10 win. Bucknell outscored Hobart 7-2 in the second quarter to take control of the game.
- After Saturday's game, Bucknell will play eight straight Patriot League contests before finishing the regular-season with a non-league game against UMBC at Messiah College on Apr. 24.
- Next up is Lehigh in Bethlehem on Feb. 28 at noon. The Mountain Hawks are coming off a 14-13 upset win over Michigan in Ann Arbor last week. They also have a 16-7 win over Iona and a 14-13 double-OT loss to Fairfield. Lehigh travels to Richmond on Saturday before hosting the Bison.
