LEWISBURG, Pa. – Freshman Sean Murray scored the tiebreaking goal with 6:48 remaining and then assisted on Owen Kovacs' important insurance goal with 1:32 to play, lifting the Bucknell men's lacrosse team to a 12-10 win over Hobart on Saturday at Christy Mathewson-Memorial Stadium. The Bison improved to 4-1 on the season, with the start of Patriot League play coming up next week.
Kovacs and Michael Meyer recorded hat tricks for Bucknell, and Murray (2-2-4) and Peter Grandolfo (1-3-4) both had four-point afternoons. Colin McLoy had a good day at the faceoff X, winning 13 of 24, and Luke Renaud made seven saves with only six goals against after coming on in relief in the first quarter.
Hobart won a one-goal game in Geneva last season, and these two teams played a close contest again this time around. Neither team led by more than two goals all day, and the momentum shifted several times throughout the day.
Bucknell jumped ahead with a goal from Meyer off the draw only nine seconds into the contest, and Kovacs followed just over a minute later. Hobart shot right back with three straight goals, and later in the half the Statesmen held the Bison scoreless for more than 19 minutes while building a 6-4 lead.
Murray ended Bucknell's drought with 1:39 left in the half, and then Luke Brunner tied it off a Grandolfo feed 22 seconds later. Kovacs and Sean Berrigan scored the first two goals of the second half to give the Bison an 8-6 lead, but the Statesmen rallied again.
Down 9-8 after three, Hobart scored back-to-back extra-man goals early in the fourth to go up 10-9. Brunner scored the goal of the day, a spectacular behind-the-back tally off another Grandolfo assist to make it 10-10 with 7:26 to play.
Murray hit the top left corner on the run from the right alley to give the Bison the lead back. Bucknell could not convert a man-up chance but got a big defensive stop on a shot-clock violation, which set up Kovacs goal off the Murray feed for a 12-10 lead with 1:32 left.
Hobart won the ensuing faceoff, but Renaud made a huge save on Connor DiTomasso and Will Pickering plucked the ground ball with a minute to go. The Bison were able to run out most of the remaining time to earn their second straight win and fourth in five.
Bucknell outshot the Statesman 43-31 and led 36-30 in ground balls. Defenseman Caleb Lewis had four ground balls, and linemate Corbin Lukanski caused three turnovers. Long-stick defensive midfielder John Young also had a big day with two caused turnovers, three ground balls, and an assist on the game's first goal.
Meyer now has 17 goals on the season, with three or more tallies in four of the five games.
DiTomasso, Daniel Cano, and David Peterkin all had two goals and an assist for Hobart, which fell to 1-2 on the season. Michael Johnson made 11 saves in goal.
Bucknell opens Patriot League play next Saturday at Lehigh at noon.
