Game One: Bucknell 14, Lehigh 8.
Bucknell tied its season-high in hits with 18 while Jacob Terwilliger posted an outstanding relief performance to earn his first career win as Bucknell defeated the Mountain Hawks 14-8 in the first game of the series.
Bucknell's top of the lineup of Kyle Lyons, Anthony Sherwin, Grant Voytovich, and Jacob Corson combined to go 13-for-16 with 9 RBIs in the victory. Sherwin and Corson each had four hits, while Corson's six RBIs in the win were the most by a Bison player since Jon Mayer drove in seven runs for the Bison against Army on April 12, 2015. Jacob Terwilliger earned his first career win on the bump in pitching four innings of relief.
To start the game, however, it was Bucknell's five-hole hitter Brendan Lowery who put the Bison on the board in the first inning on a two-RBI double that plated both Voytovich and Sherwin. An error allowed Sherwin to reach before Lowery's hit, and the Bison capitalized on another error in the infield by the Mountain Hawks on a ball hit by Tyler Dunn that allowed Corson to score on the play and give the Bison a 3-0 lead.
Nine of Bucknell's 14 runs came in the first three innings, with each team scoring at least one run in the first three frames.
After Lehigh pulled a run back in the first, the Bison added four more runs in the top of the second, as Mason Kelly, Lyons, and Sherwin started off the inning with singles. Sherwin's single up the middle scored Kelly, before a double by Voytovich plated Lyons. An infield single by Corson and a wild pitch accounted for Bucknell's other runs in the inning.
Bucknell added two more runs in the third to respond to two runs by the Mountain Hawks in the bottom of the second, as the trio of Sherwin, Voytovich, and Corson each singled in plating two more runs to give Bucknell a 9-3 advantage.
Lehigh wouldn't go away, however, as the home team scored one run in the third and three in the fourth to pull within 9-7. Jacob Terwilliger entered the game in replacing starter Austin Odell in the fourth in a tough spot, as Lehigh had managed to put two runners on with nobody out in the inning after scoring twice in the frame already. After hitting the first batter he faced, Terwilliger settled in to limit the Lehigh scoring to a lone sac fly by Tyler Young and prevent any further damage.
Corson brought home his third RBI of the day to restore a three-run advantage, 10-7, in the fifth on a single that scored Lyons, before the sophomore stamped his authority on the game with a three run home run, the second of his career, that gave Bucknell a 13-7 lead in the seventh inning. Kendall Pierson brought in Bucknell's final run of the inning on a sac fly that scored Lowery.
Terwilliger finished the job, allowing just one run to the Mountain Hawks in the bottom of the seventh. The junior allowed just two hits and one earned run in pitching the final four innings of the game, and posted a big strikeout to end the game with the bases loaded to preserve the victory.
Bucknell's 18 hits were tied for the most by the team this season after the team also rapped out 18 hits against Navy on March 18. Bucknell has now accounted for ten or more hits in 13 of its 26 games this season. Corson's four hits and six RBIs were both career highs.
Game Two: Lehigh 5, Bucknell 4
Despite another double-digit performance in hits by the squad, the Bison were limited in game two, leaving ten players on base in a 5-4 defeat to Lehigh. Grant Voytovich's first career home run brought Bucknell within one in the ninth inning, but the Mountain Hawks managed to hang on for the final out in the game to secure a series split on the day.
Bucknell opened the scoring in the second inning, taking a 1-0 lead in the game after Lowery started the frame off with a double. Tyler Dunn, who picked up three hits on the day, then brought the senior home on a single through the right side.
The Mountain Hawks took the lead in the bottom of the inning, however, as three straight doubles to open the inning allowed the Mountain Hawks to score two runs. Bucknell starter Ben Magovern managed to escape the rest of the inning unscathed, retiring the next three batters he faced to keep it a one-run game, 2-1. The first-year has now gone at least seven innings in back-to-back appearances on the mound, and set a new career high with seven strikeouts on Sunday.
Neither team managed to get on the board afterwards until the sixth, when the Mountain Hawks added two more runs on three hits in the frame in taking a 4-1 lead.
The two teams traded runs in the eighth inning. Voytovich started the inning off with a single before moving to second on a wild pitch. Corson then knocked in his seventh RBI of the day to pull Bucknell within two.
Lehigh responded with a run of its own, starting the bottom of the eighth with a double, a walk, and a single in plating its fifth run of the game. Bucknell reliever Andrew Funovits kept the Bison within striking distance, getting a strike out for the last out of the eighth to keep Bucknell within three down to its final three outs.
Lyons put one runner on after he reached on a fielder's choice after a leadoff walk by Pierson, setting up Voytovich's two-run home run down the left field line to pull the Bison within one. Corson singled one batter later for his sixth hit of the day between the two games to put the tying run on first, but the Mountain Hawks managed to get a strikeout for the final out and hang on to the one-run win.
Bucknell managed 13 hits on the day, leaving ten runners on base in the defeat. Dunn went 3-for-4 on the day for his first three-hit game of his career. Lowery, Corson, Voytovich, and Lyons each added two hits, while Voytovich's two-RBI game was his seventh game this season with multiple RBIs.
Bucknell will have several days before hitting the road again at Penn State on Wednesday for a midweek matchup. The Bison will then return to Depew Field for a rematch against Lafayette, hosting the Leopards for three games over the weekend.
