UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – The Bucknell University baseball team fell just short of knocking off its second Power-5 opponent this season in falling 7-6 to Penn State on Wednesday evening. Bucknell's first night game of the season, the Bison led 5-0, but a resurgent Penn State squad scored seven unanswered runs from the first inning to the fourth in taking a narrow victory.
The Bison got out to a quick start, scoring five runs in what proved to be an eventful first inning. Kyle Lyons and Anthony Sherwin drew two walks to open the game on nine pitches, before a fly out by Chris Cannizzaro moved both runners over a bag. Grant Voytovich was hit by a pitch one batter later, setting up the in-form Jacob Corson to single home both Lyons and Sherwin to get Bucknell on the board.
Reigning Patriot League Rookie of the Week Tyler Dunn followed up Corson's hit with an RBI single of his own to score Voytovich, before three straight walks by Penn State allowed Bucknell to score two more runs in the frame as Bucknell batted around in the inning.
However, it didn't take long for the Nittany Lions to respond, as PSU scored three runs in the first and two in the second to tie the game at five. The home team then scored a run each in the third and the fourth to take a 7-5 lead. Penn State reliever Carson Kohls proved effective after entering in the first inning to alleviate the Bison threat, pitching 3.1 innings and limiting the Bison offense to just three hits during that time span.
Sherwin and Cannizzaro, a combo that proved big for the Bison during the Navy series earlier this year, helped Bucknell pull within one in the sixth inning after Sherwin tripled with two strikes to lead off the inning. A double by his senior teammate Cannizzaro, back in the lineup after a seven-game absence, then allowed Sherwin to score as Bucknell trimmed the deficit to just one, 7-6.
The Bucknell bullpen proved effective for the Bison in keeping the squad in the game, as Nikhil Patel, Luke Allain, Graeme Carroll, Nick Mulvey, and Andrew Funovits kept the Nittany Lions off the board for the remainder of the game. However, Penn State did its part in seeing out the game with their relief staff, not allowing a hit after Cannizzaro's double in taking the 7-6 win.
Cannizzaro enjoyed a successful return to the lineup, as the Patriot League Preseason Player of the Year was one of two Bison along with Dunn to record multiple hits. Corson added two more RBIs to his season total after posting nine in five games last week, while Sherwin added two runs scored.
The Bison will now return to league play, hosting Lafayette in an important series this weekend at Depew Field. The two teams will play a doubleheader starting at noon on Saturday before playing a single game on Sunday set for a 1 p.m. start.
