LEWISBURG, Pa. – Will Greer improved to 5-0 this season with his second straight complete-game victory over Lafayette on Saturday afternoon as Bucknell went 1-1 against Lafayette in a doubleheader at Depew Field. Bucknell edged the Leopards in the first game 3-2, before falling in game two, 7-2.
Game One: Bucknell 3, Lafayette 2
Greer earned his second straight complete-game win against the Leopards, allowing just three hits over seven innings as the junior managed his fifth win of the season.
Bucknell was quick out of the gate in support of Greer, scoring its first run of the game in the bottom of the first after a nine-pitch top of the first from the junior. Anthony Sherwin and Chris Cannizzaro each walked to start the inning before moving a base on a wild pitch. Grant Voytovich then brought Sherwin home on a single to left field to give Bucknell a 1-0 advantage.
The Bison extended their lead in the bottom of the third, capping off its scoring thanks to two hits from Sherwin and Cannizzaro to open the inning. Sherwin singled, before Cannizzaro ripped a double down the left field line for Bucknell's second run of the inning. Brendan Lowery then rapped another double down the left field line to score Cannizzaro and give Bucknell a 3-0 lead.
The Leopards pulled a run back in the fourth after Pete Ciuffreda doubled to lead off the inning before being moved to third on a fly out. A two-out error by the Bison in the infield allowed Ciuffreda to score on a ground ball and cut into the Bucknell lead.
Greer cruised through the next few innings, retiring six straight batters, but Ciuffreda managed to involve himself once more, homering to right center off the Depew Field scoreboard to pull Lafayette within one, 3-2. Greer settled in the rest of the inning, getting two straight flyouts to end the Leopard threat, and also pitched a 1-2-3 top of the seventh in earning his fifth win of the year. Greer's five wins are the most by a Bison in a single season since teammate Chris DiFiore managed five last season, and the tenth of his career.
Bucknell managed seven hits as a team, with catcher Logan Kellerman posting a 2-for-2 day at the plate. Cannizzaro knocked his sixth double of the season in the win, while Sherwin added a hit and two runs scored.
Game Two: Lafayette 7, Bucknell 2
Lafayette started hot, taking a 3-0 lead in the first inning in never trailing in game two, going on to take a 7-2 win to earn the split on the day. Bucknell pulled within three, 5-2, in the eighth, but two insurance runs by the Leopards in the ninth ensured a 1-1 day for the visitors.
The first inning started innocuous for the Bison, as starting pitcher Tyler O'Neill managed a fly out and a ground out to third baseman Jacob Corson for the first two outs of the game. However, four straight hits by the Leopards, capped off by a two-RBI single from Seif Ingram, had the visitors race out to a 3-0 lead.
Bucknell scattered several doubles courtesy of Cannizzaro and Tyler Dunn, but Lafayette starter Jake Bloss managed another solid outing after limiting the Bison earlier this season in Easton.
Cannizzaro was involved once more as Bucknell managed to get on the board in the third. The senior singled through the right side with two outs before stealing second. That set up Voytovich to once more knock an RBI single in cutting the Leopard lead to 3-1.
Lafayette added two more runs in the fifth as the visitors opened the inning up with three straight hits. After Pete Ciuffreda's single gave the Leopards a 5-1 lead with no outs, Brendan Lowery and Sherwin combined for a well-executed 4-6-3 double play to keep the Bison within striking distance and end the Lafayette threat.
Lowery's RBI single in the sixth brought Bucknell within three, 5-2, but the Leopards kept their foot on the gas in the ninth by adding two more runs to take a 7-2 win. Lowery's hit was the only hit given up by Lafayette reliever Jacob Ciccone, who earned the save after pitching the final three innings.
Cannizzaro and Voytovich had two hits apiece for the Bison, while Dunn also added multiple hits. The two hits for Cannizzaro marked the second time in three games the senior has hit safely multiple times in a game since his return earlier this week against Penn State.
Bucknell will now look ahead to a single game on Sunday against the Leopards to close the series. The two teams have split four games so far, and the game will be broadcasted live from Depew Field on ESPN+.
