LEWISBURG, Pa. – Bucknell used a four-run first and a three-run third in support of Austin Odell's fourth win of the season, taking the season series over Lafayette with a 7-2 victory on Sunday afternoon.
Bucknell earned its tenth conference win of the season in the victory (10-5), improving to 14-16 overall. Bucknell remains in second place in the standings, trailing first-place Army (8-3). Bucknell secured a regular-season series victory over Lafayette by winning its third game of the season against the Leopards.
The first inning proved to be a major turning point of the nine-inning contest for both teams. Lafayette started brightly, with its first three batters reaching via two walks and a single by Pete Ciuffreda. Logan Kellerman managed to catch Leopard leadoff hitter Justin Grech on a steal attempt, before Anthony Sherwin worked a 6-3 double play with two men on and one out to end the inning.
Bucknell turned that momentum on the defensive side into a four-run bottom of the inning. Four of Bucknell's first five batters reached via a walk or a hit by pitch as the Bison walked in two runs with the bases loaded with Tyler Dunn and Sean Keys at the plate.
Kellerman then made his contribution on the offensive end, knocking a two-RBI single to center field that scored both Dunn and Jacob Corson to give the Bison a 4-0 lead.
Odell settled in after the first, retiring seven straight batters, and nine of the next ten batters he faced sans a single from Lafayette's Ciuffreda in the fourth. The senior finished his day by pitching seven innings, allowing six hits with two strikeouts in earning his fourth victory of the year. Odell has managed to go at least seven innings in four appearances now this season.
Bucknell extended the lead in the third inning, when Keys rocked a double to right center with one out to start proceedings, before Kellerman added his second single of the day to put two on. Anthony Sherwin then walked to load the bases for Cannizzaro, who brought all three runners home on a deep triple to left center to put Bucknell up 7-0.
Lafayette scored one run on a sac fly in the sixth, and had its best chance to get back into the game in the eighth when the Leopards loaded the bases on two hit by pitches and a walk. Graeme Carroll entered the game in that tough situation, but kept his composure after hitting the first batter he faced to limit Lafayette to one run in the frame on an RBI fielder's choice. Carroll then used a strike out and a ground out to second baseman Brendan Lowery to end the inning with minimal damage leading 7-2. Carroll finished the ninth by allowing just one hit as Bucknell earned its tenth win of the Patriot League campaign on Sunday.
Kellerman led the way for the Bison with three hits, tying his career best. Cannizzaro continued his great run of form since returning against Penn State on Wednesday, notching seven hits in that time span, with two of those coming on Sunday. Corson also added two hits for the Bison in the victory.
Bucknell will now look ahead to a matchup at Villanova on Tuesday. The game will be available to watch on Flo Sports.
