PLYMOUTH MEETING, Pa. – The Bucknell University baseball team fell 10-4 on the road at Villanova in Tuesday non-conference action to the Wildcats. The Wildcats used a five-run fifth to pull away from the Bison, despite two RBI singles from sophomore Grant Voytovich.
Villanova raced out to a 3-0 lead in the second inning, capitalizing on an error in the infield by the Bison. The Wildcats hit two singles after a strikeout by Bucknell starter Brady Swenson began the inning, before the error loaded the bases. Swenson struck out the next batter he faced, but a walk and an RBI single allowed the Wildcats to take an early 3-0 advantage shortly afterwards.
Voytovich was on hand to pull Bucknell back in the game in the third, singling home Kyle Lyons. Both Lyons and Anthony Sherwin singled previously in the inning, setting up Voytovich's seventh game with an RBI in his last nine appearances as Bucknell pulled within two, 3-1.
The Wildcats added a run in the fourth, breaking the game open in the fifth with five more runs to take a 9-1 lead. Villanova's first four batters reached via a hit or a walk, and the Wildcats began their scoring in the frame with a bases-loaded walk. Shane Solari then hit a two-RBI single, before the Wildcats tallied two more runs on a hit by pitch and a fielder's choice.
Bucknell scored a run each in the final three innings, but the Wildcats' lead proved insurmountable in avenging a 2019 10-5 loss in Plymouth Meeting to the Bison by a nearly identical score. Senior Kendall Pierson scored Jacob Corson on an RBI double in the seventh for Bucknell's second run, while Voytovich delivered another RBI single in the eighth to score Lyons. Chris Cannizzaro delivered Bucknell's final run after he was hit by a pitch in the ninth with the bases loaded.
Bucknell used eight pitchers in the game, with Nikhil Patel and Andrew Funovits each posting clean innings of work in the defeat. Lyons and Voytovich each tallied multiple hits in the game for Bucknell, who falls to 14-17 this season.
Bucknell will have several days to regroup before traveling to Holy Cross on Saturday for an important three-game series. The two teams split a Sunday doubleheader in Lewisburg this season.
