Holy Cross edged the Bison 2-1 in the first game on a walk-off single, before overturning a 10-4 Bison lead into an 11-10 win in the second game of the day.
Game One: Holy Cross 2, Bucknell 1
Game one was a pitcher's duel between Holy Cross starter Jack DiLauro and Bucknell's Will Greer, who combined to strike out 18 batters in the game. Bucknell took a 1-0 lead on a solo home run by Sean Keys in the fourth inning, before Holy Cross responded with a solo shot of its own in the bottom of the frame. The Crusaders then won the game on a walk-off single by pinch hitter Nick Wang in the bottom of the seventh.
Greer (5-1) was charged his first loss of the season, but the junior gave the Bison another quality pitching outing, throwing yet another complete game and allowing just five hits and two earned runs.
Neither team could get things going offensively in the game until the bottom of the fourth, when first-year shortstop Sean Keys managed to get ahold of a 1-2 pitch for his first career run to center field. The hit for Keys was the third of his career, and the freshman has now compiled hits and RBIs in two of his last three appearances. The home run, a solo shot, gave Bucknell a 1-0 lead.
The Crusaders responded with a solo home run of their own in the bottom of the inning, when Nate Wolf notched his first hit of the day to tie the game at one.
After Keys' home run in the fourth, the Bison were limited to a lone single by Jacob Corson in the sixth the rest of the way. Holy Cross' Tyler Mudd reached with one out on a bunt single in the bottom of the seventh, before stealing second. That set up pinch hitter Nick Wang to single home the center fielder for the first win of the day for the Crusaders.
Bucknell was limited to four hits on the day, with Grant Voytovich, Jacob Corson, and Tyler Dunn each posting hits for the Bison in the defeat.
Game Two: Holy Cross 11, Bucknell 10
A wild game two went right down to the wire as the Crusaders managed to overturn a 10-4 Bison lead in the seventh to an 11-10 win. Holy Cross' Brendan Jones scored Connor Peek in a play at the plate in the bottom of the ninth, as Holy Cross pushed across three runs in each of the final two innings to take the one-run victory, the third straight one-run win for Holy Cross this season against the Bison.
The game started brightly for the Bison, as Corson doubled home Chris Cannizzaro to give Bucknell a 1-0 in support of starter Tyler O'Neill. Bucknell then extended that lead with a five-run third inning. Jake Wortman started things off in the frame by drawing a walk on four straight pitches with the bases loaded, before Kyle Lyons drove in two runs on an RBI single. Cannizzaro then singled to the pitcher to allow Wortman to score from second on an errant throw in the infield.
Holy Cross responded with three runs in the bottom of the third, before Bucknell added three runs of its own in the top of the fourth. Mason Kelly knocked an RBI triple, the first of his career, to start the scoring before Jake Wortman singled the junior home shortly afterwards. Lyons then rounded out the scoring with his second single through the left side of the day to give Bucknell a 9-3 lead.
Bucknell kept the lead at six in the sixth, 10-4, after Brendan Lowery touched home on a wild pitch, counteracting a solo home run by Peek in the fourth.
However, the Crusaders would score seven unanswered runs to close the game over the final three innings, adding one run in the seventh, and three in the eighth and ninth, respectively, to take the one-run victory.
The loss for the Bison when scoring ten or more runs was the first for Bucknell since a 15-10 loss to Navy on March 28, 2021.
Holy Cross used six pitchers in the game, with Luke Fox earning his second victory of the doubleheader in getting the final out of the ninth.
The Bison managed 13 hits overall, with Dunn, Corson, Lyons and Lowery each picking up multiple hits. Keys added another hit for the Bison after coming in as a pinch hitter, and the three RBIs by junior Lyons were a career high for the native of West Chester, Pennsylvania.
Bucknell will look to claim the final game of the series on Sunday, with a 1 p.m. first pitch scheduled. The game will be streamed live on ESPN+.
