LEWISBURG, Pa. – The Bucknell University baseball team is set to return to action on Wednesday for a matchup against Penn State before hosting Lafayette for three games this weekend in Lewisburg.
Bucknell's matchup against the Nittany Lions will be streamed live on Big Ten Plus, while Sunday's single matchup against the Leopards will be streamed live on ESPN+.
Saturday's doubleheader against Lafayette will have live stats available.
- Nearing the halfway point of the league season, The Bison are 8-4 in conference games, and currently sit in second place in the standings to Army (6-2) based on win percentage.
- The weekend series against the Leopards is a big one, as Lafayette is currently 5-3 in league games in the third spot, including going 1-1 against the Bison in Easton one week prior.
- The Bison went 3-2 last week, and earned several weekly honors in the process. Sophomore Jacob Corson was named the Bison Athlete of the Week, while first-year Tyler Dunn was named the Patriot League Rookie of the Week.
- The league honor for Dunn was the second by a Bison this season, as Will Greer earned Patriot League Pitcher of the Week honors earlier this year. The Rookie of the Week honor is the first for the Bison since Anthony Sherwin earned the distinction on March 30, 2021.
- Corson had an outstanding week for the Bison, hitting .474 with nine RBIs in Bucknell's 3-2 week. The six RBIs for Corson against Lehigh in game one were the most by a Bison player since 2015, when Jon Mayer drove in seven runs in a win over Army.
- Bucknell's 18 hits against Lehigh tied its season-best, and the Bison were bolstered by an impressive showing from the top of the lineup. Bucknell's 1-4 hitters of Kyle Lyons, Sherwin, Grant Voytovich, and Corson combined to go 13-for-16 with nine RBis and 12 runs scored.
- Bucknell's average of .281 as a team ranks second in the Patriot League just behind Lehigh (.287), and the 13 RBIs by the team against the Mountain Hawks in game one were the third-most by a Patriot League school in a game this season.
- Additionally, Voytovich also hit his first career run in game two against the Mountain Hawks, a two-run shot that brought Bucknell within one run in the top of the ninth.
- Corson's nine hits were tied for the most on the team with Lyons over the five-game stretch, as teammate Lyons also accounted for nine hits over that time span. Lyons' nine runs scored were also the most on the team during that period.
- Sherwin continues to have an impressive season, with the sophomore ranking third in the Patriot League in batting average (.363), on-base percentage (.463), and second in runs scored (26). Sherwin's 37 hits rank third in the Patriot League.
- Lyons ranks sixth in batting average (.351), and has embraced the role of the leadoff hitter for the Bison since making his debut at that spot in the lineup against Holy Cross seven games ago. The junior is hitting .367 with 11 runs scored during that period in the leadoff spot, posting an on-base percentage of .441. Additionally, Lyons has also hit safely in seven straight games.
- In 12 conference games so far this season, Brendan Lowery is hitting . 386 with 18 hits, six doubles, and posting an on-base percentage of .449. The senior is having an outstanding season, surpassing his career total in hits this season alone, and also hitting his first career triple and home run this season. Lowery's two-RBI double got the Bison on the board in the first game of the Lehigh series, and he has now accumulated multiple hits in six of his last eight games.
- Junior Greer has continued his excellent year on the mound, and is posting a 1.71 ERA in conference games this season with a 3-0 record. The native of Cohasset, Mass. has an ERA of 2.83 this season in total, and pitched a complete game, the second of his career, in a game one win over Lafayette to open the weekend.
- Ben Magovern has now pitched seven innings in two straight appearances, posting back-to-back career highs in strikeouts against Holy Cross and Lehigh. Magovern pitched five solid innings against Navy on March 19 while not allowing a run, and has posted at least four strikeouts in four of his seven appearances this season. Magovern's seven strikeouts against Lehigh were the most by a Bison pitcher this season along with Greer, who struck out seven against Richmond earlier this season.
- Tyler O'Neill started his second game of the year in game two against the Leopards, allowing just one run in five innings while scattering seven hits. The first-year has picked up eight strikeouts in his last two appearances for the Bison.
- In Bucknell's game against the Mount, Ben Sinins posted his first career hit in a big spot, putting Bucknell ahead for good in the eighth on a triple. Mason Kelly also had a big day for the Bison in that game, scoring Sinins for an insurance run in the frame while adding a career-best two doubles in that contest.
- Jacob Terwilliger earned his first career win on the mound for the Bison, pitching four innings while only allowing two hits and one earned run. The four innings easily surpassed Terwilliger's previous career high, and the junior has also hit a home run this season against Duke.
- Penn State is 10-15 this season, and is 2-4 in Big Ten games this year. The Bison last played the Nittany Lions to open the 2021 season at the USA baseball complex, falling 9-6. Chris Cannizzaro scored Bucknell's first run of the season when his sac fly scored Lowery in that game.
- Lafayette enters the game at 10-21 overall, and is coming off a 2-2 weekend after playing the Bison and Navy. Lafayette boasts a 7-3 record at home, while managing a 3-15 record in road games.
- After the weekend, the Bison will play Villanova on Tuesday, April 12 before traveling to Holy Cross for three games from April 16-17.
