No. 17 Navy Uses Big First Quarter to Turn Back Bison
3/19/2022 2:07:00 PM | Women's Lacrosse
ANNAPOLIS, Md. – The 17th-ranked Navy women's lacrosse team outscored Bucknell 7-0 in the first quarter on the way to a 15-3 victory in the Patriot League openers for both teams Saturday at Navy-Marine Corps Stadium.
Carly Cenci, Laurel McHale, and Allie Boyce scored goals for the Bison, who fell to 3-5 on the season. Raegan Roelofs logged three goals and three assists to lead the Mids (6-1), who were coming off back-to-back wins over ranked opponents No. 15 Drexel and No. 16 Johns Hopkins.
Navy scored on its first three shots of the day and led 3-0 after only 3:04 of action. Roelofs scored twice in the final 17 seconds of the first period to make it 7-0, and the Mids led 11-1 at halftime.
Bucknell was much brighter in the second half, but Navy goalies Torres and Richardell made a combined eight saves to prevent any hopes of a Bison comeback. Bucknell won five of the seven draw controls and outshot Navy 15-7 over the final 30 minutes.
Defender Ella Payer had a strong game for the Bison with seven draw controls and three caused turnovers. Caitlin McHale tallied three caused turnovers and three ground balls, all in the second half. Boyce led the team with four ground balls while attempting nine of Bucknell's 20 shots.
The Bison are back in action next Saturday at home against Lafayette at 3 p.m. The game can be seen on ESPN+.
