Bucknell at a Glance
- Two teams looking to shed losing streaks and get on the board in Patriot League play square off on Saturday when Bucknell hosts Lafayette. The Bison have dropped four straight on the heels of a three-game winning streak, while the Leopards have lost five in a row. Bucknell opened conference action last week with a 20-5 loss at No. 17 Navy, and Lafayette fell 13-9 at home to American.
- The Lafayette game is the first of three in seven days for the Bison. Colgate comes to Graham Field on Wednesday night, and then the Bison visit Lehigh the following Saturday.
- The Bison are looking to get back to their stellar defensive form from earlier in the month. In a three-game winning streak against Robert Morris, Duquesne, and St. Bonaventure, Bucknell conceded a total of only 21 goals (7.0 per game). But over the last four games, opponents have dropped 71 goals (17.8 per game).
- Laurel McHale continues to lead the Bison in goals (19) and points (25). McHale has scored at least one goal in every game this season, and she ranks ninth in the Patriot League with 2.38 goals per game. Â
- Tatumn Kohlbrenner (11-6-17), Katie Wendell (11-6-17), Emma Cashwell (9-6-15), and Allie Boyce (13-1-14) have also hit double figures in points.
- Carly Cenci leads the team with seven assists.
- Ella Payer leads the Patriot League in caused turnovers per game (1.88) and ranks seventh in draw controls per game (5.13). Abby Neff is second in the league in ground balls per game (2.50).
- Bucknell ranks sixth in the Patriot League in scoring at 10.5 goals per game. The Bison are fourth in shots per game (29.3).
- Just under 55% of Bucknell's goals have been assisted, and the Bison lead the Patriot League in assists per game (6.5).
- Laurel McHale scored five goals in the two games last week and now leads the team with 17 goals and 23 points on the season. McHale ranks fifth in the Patriot League in goals per game (2.83) and seventh in points per game (3.83).
- Bucknell leads the league in caused turnovers per game (10.8) and ranks second to Navy in ground balls per game (17.8).
- The Bison went 3-6 during an abbreviated 2021 spring season. The wins came over Lafayette, American, and Colgate, all at home.
- Bucknell was picked to finish eighth in the Patriot League preseason poll. Loyola was tabbed the preseason favorite, followed by Navy, Army, Lehigh, Boston University, Colgate, Holy Cross, Bucknell, American, and Lafayette.
- The Bison returned nine starters, including three of the top four scorers and the bulk of the defensive unit, from last year's squad.
- Seniors Cashwell and Eva Macris, along with junior Payer, have been named captains for the 2022 season. Macris is in her second year as a captain.
- Payer is Bucknell's lone returning All-Patriot League selection. She earned the honor as a sophomore after leading the team with 24 draw controls while playing strong defense. Midfielder Mason Rode, who graduated last spring, joined Payer on the All-PL Second Team.
- Head coach Jackie Dando is in her third season as Bucknell's head coach. Each of the first two were disrupted by the COVID-19 pandemic, however. Former Colgate star Haley O'Hanlon and Veronica John have joined the staff as assistant coaches.
- The Leopards come in at 1-6 overall, with the lone win an 11-9 home decision against La Salle on Feb. 26.
- Bucknell and Lafayette have played one common opponent, with both teams taking a 10-goal loss to Binghamton.
- Most recently, Lafayette fell 13-9 to American last Saturday. That game was tied at 6-6 early in the third quarter, but the Eagles scored five straight goals to pull away.
- Lafayette has been outscored 107-63 on the season. Olivia Cunningham (14) and Clare Culligan (13) are the team's top two goal-scorers.
- While Bucknell leads the league in caused turnovers, Lafayette ranks No. 2 in fewest offensive turnovers with only 13.1 per game. Â Â
- The Leopards went 0-6 in the abbreviated 2021 season, including a 15-7 loss to Bucknell at Graham Field. The Bison jumped out to a 6-1 lead in that game, and after the Leopards pulled within 8-6 at halftime, Bucknell opened the second half on a 7-0 run to take control. Katie Wendell had a six-point day for the Bison with two goals and four assists, and Julia Bradbury tallied five goals.
- Bucknell is 8-34 all-time against Lafayette, but the Bison have won the last two meetings. Both of those came at home, 16-15 in overtime in 2019 and 15-7 last year. Lafayette's last win was a 15-10 verdict in Easton in 2018.
- Lafayette won the first 25 series meetings before the Bison finally broke through with a 16-9 win in 2004. Â Â
- Bucknell is home again on Wednesday against Colgate at 5 p.m. The Raiders are 2-7 on the season but opened Patriot League play with an impressive 13-7 road win at Boston University.
