LEWISBURG, Pa. – Emma Cashwell scored all four of her goals in the second half, and Mason Rode capped off a memorable Senior Day with a critical draw control with three minutes to go in the game to help the Bucknell women's lacrosse team hold off Colgate 13-11 on Saturday at Graham Field.
The Bison won their second straight game to improve to 3-3 overall and 3-2 in Patriot League play. Colgate fell to 4-3, 3-2, despite nearly pulling off a big comeback.
Cashwell scored three straight goals in a span of just under five minutes to stake the Bison to a 13-7 lead with 14:52 to go. But Colgate rallied with four in a row, two coming Noelle Patterson, who had a team-high four goals in the game.
Bucknell had been a perfect 17-for-17 on clears, but its first failed clear of the day led to a transition goal from Eliza Soutter with 3:03 to play, cutting the margin to 13-11.
After a Bucknell timeout, Rode secured her fifth draw control of the game, and the Bison were essentially able to run out the clock. Bucknell worked the ball around, and with 1:55 to go Colgate goalie Amelia Cunningham made a save on Laurel McHale. But the Bison retained possession with a full 90 seconds on the shot clock. The Bison ran the timer all the way down before sending a shot wide, and when the Raiders finally regained possession with 20 seconds to go they had to go the length of the field still down by two goals.
Neither team led by more than a goal for the first 23 minutes of the contest, but the Bison made some headway late in the first half. McHale fought off a defender to give Bucknell a 6-5 lead with 6:45 left in the half, and then Katie Wendell and Tatumn Kohlbrenner followed to give the Bison an 8-5 lead at halftime.
Tallies by McHale and Cashwell swelled the lead to 10-5, and then after Colgate scored two in a row to pull within 10-7, Cashwell notched three in a row to make it 13-7.
Bucknell finished with a 37-29 shot advantage and led 16-15 in ground balls. Both teams committed 14 turnovers. Lauren Kinnee started in goal for the Bison and made one save. Caitlin Tucker came on in relief midway through the first half, and she finished with six saves en route to the win.
In addition to Cashwell's four goals, McHale tallied three plus an assist, and Rode logged two goals and one assist. Kali Peeples also scored twice, and Emily Baird notched three caused turnovers. Cashwell also tallied six draw controls.
Bucknell is slated to play its final three games of the regular season on the road, starting at Loyola next Saturday at 6 p.m.
