Bison Fall in Both Games of a Doubleheader at Charleston Southern

LEWISBURG, Pa. – The Bucknell baseball team dropped both games of a doubleheader to Charleston Southern on Saturday at Nielson Field at CSU Ballpark. Charleston Southern won big in the first game with an 11-1 score in eight innings before taking the second game 7-4.
Michael Chiaravallo was a bright spot in a Bison offense. The junior broke up a no-hitter into the fifth inning of game one, then had a multi-hit game in the latter game. Â
Freshman Garrett Mathias hit his first collegiate home run with a two-run homer in the second game. Garrison Bullock hit his first home run in Orange and Blue in the second game on a solo shot.
Deacon Bowne notched his first career RBI, plating Bucknell's lone run in game one on a sacrifice fly.
Freshmen Liam Jones, Brady Hoar and Tyler Seidman all made their collegiate debuts on the mound. Hoar got the start in the second game, but was tagged for five runs on three hits. Jones pitched 2.2 innings in relief in game one and allowed two runs. Seidman had a solid debut in relief in game two. He pitched 1.2 scoreless innings and fanned two batters. Â
Game 1: Charleston Southern 11, Bucknell 1 (8 inn.)
Charleston Southern got on the board quickly in the bottom of the first on a sacrifice fly. A double by Kain Collins led off the inning and a wild pitch moved him to third before the sac fly by Lucas Pringle brought him home.
The Buccaneers went back to work in the third inning, extending the lead to 4-1. A single led off the inning before a hit-batter and two errors led to two runs. The Bucanneers scored their third run on wild pitch.
Bucknell's first hit of the game came in the fifth inning on a single by Michael Chiaravallo. Deacon Bowne drew a two-out walk, but the Bison stranded both runners.
The Buccaneers scored two more in the sixth before the Bison got one back in the seventh. Ryan Facinelli and Zac Selfon led off the inning with singles, and a fly ball by Chiaravallo advanced Facinelli to third. Bowne notched his first career RBI with a sacrifice fly to bring home Bucknell's only run of the game.
Charleston Southern exploded in the eighth, scoring five runs to hit the run rule. The five runs came on two hits, four walks and an error.
Everett Garber got the start on the mound for the Bison, allowing four runs on three hits with two strikeouts. Liam Jones made his collegiate debut in relief of Garber in the fourth. He got through two scoreless innings before the Buccaneers plated two runs in the sixth. AJ Murray struck out three batters in 1.1 scoreless innings of relief in his first outing of the year.
Facinelli, Selfon and Chiaravallo had Bucknell's only hits in the game. Charleston Southern had 11 hits and walked nine times.
Game 2: Charleston Southern 8, Bucknell 5
Bullock's home run gave the Bison an early lead in the second inning, but the Buccaneers answered with four runs in the bottom half of the inning. Charleston Southern tied it on a sacrifice fly before a two-out rally scored three more, and they plated another run in the third inning to make it a 5-1 ballgame.
Facinelli got on base with a two-out single in the fourth, setting up Mathias' two-run homer to cut the deficit to 5-3. The Buccaneers had the answer again with two runs in the bottom half to restore their four-run lead.
Chiaravallo drove in Michael Trommer on a single in the fifth to get a run back, but the Bison left two stranded in the inning.
After allowing two runs in the fourth, Dante Pavone had a nice 1-2-3 inning in the fifth. The junior struck out two batters in 2.2 innings.
Seidman took over four Pavone in the sixth, tossing 1.2 scoreless innings with two strikeouts. He inherited and stranded a runner in the sixth, then got out of trouble to strand two runners in the seventh.
The Buccaneers got another run back off of Tyler Hawkins in the eighth inning to extend the lead to 8-4. Hawkins made his return to the mound for the first time in nearly a year.
John Calabrese got a pinch-hit single in the ninth to lead off the inning and start late rally. The Bison got some help on a few errors as Ty Lagoni and Zac Selfon reached safely to load the bases with one out. Lleyton Coupe drew a walk to bring in Calabrese to make it 8-5. The Bison got the tying run on first base, but a strikeout ended the game as the Buccaneers held on to take the win.
The Bison out-hit the Buccaneers 9-8 and both teams made two errors.Â
Eight different Bison had a hit in the game. Chiaravallo had a multi-hit day, and he had four hits and two RBIs in the series. Despite the nine hits, the Bison struck out 17 times in the game and walked four times.
Bucknell is back in action next weekend for a three-game series at Radford, beginning on Friday at 3 p.m.
