RADFORD, Va. – The Bucknell baseball team dropped game one with Radford 7-1 on Friday afternoon at Sherman Carter Memorial Stadium.
For the third time this season, Bucknell (0-4) has out-hit their opponent but have fallen in each game. Radford (4-1) used a three-run second inning to get ahead early in the ballgame, and the Bison could not overcome the early spurt.
Michael Trommer was 2-for-4 at the plate, but the designated hitter was stranded both times on the basepaths. Zach Selfon was 1-for-4 at the plate and drove in Bucknell's only run of the game on a groundout in the ninth. Selfon has had a hit in each of his first four games as a Bison.
John Calabrese and Billy Fulharty both picked up a hit, and Garrett Mathias and Ryan Facinelli both had hits coming off of the bench.
Jonathan Adelmann got the start and looked solid on the mound after Radford's three-run second inning. The right-hander allowed just one run on two hits over the next three innings. He finished after five innings with four runs on five hits, and only one run was earned as the Bison made two errors.
Two quick errors in the second gave Radford runners in scoring position before a sacrifice fly and a flurry of hits made it 3-0. The Highlanders grabbed another run in the fourth on a squeeze bunt.
Radford then broke open the game with another three runs in the seventh to extend the lead to 7-0.
The Bison are back in action for a doubleheader beginning at 12 p.m. at Sherman Carter Memorial Stadium.
