LEWISBURG, Pa. – The Patriot League Rowing Championships are back on the Cooper River in New Jersey on Friday morning. Preliminary heats begin at 8 a.m., with finals starting at 1:30 p.m. Both sessions will be streamed live on ESPN+.
The Patriot League Championships feature a nine-team field, with Georgetown and MIT competing as associate members of the conference in the sport of women's rowing. For the first time this year, a Second Varsity Four competition has been added to the championship, in addition to the traditional
Varsity Eight, Second Varsity Eight, and Varsity Four races.
Â
Points are weighted heavily in favor of the Varsity Eight, and in the event of a tie after all four finals, the championship would be awarded to the winner of the Varsity Eight. The championship team receives an automatic bid to the NCAA Championships, which will be held on Lake Mercer in West Windsor, N.J., May 30-June 1.
Bucknell historically has fared very well at the Patriot League Championships. The Bison finished fourth in the inaugural event in 2005, and then they won seven straight titles from 2006-12. The Bison had never finished lower than fourth until last year, when a very young Bucknell team placed fifth. The Bison qualified for Grand Finals in all three events, finishing fourth in the Varsity Four, fifth in the Varsity Eight, and sixth in the Second Varsity Eight.
Â
This year's squad once again has some exciting young rowers, with only three seniors on the roster. Three first-year rowers are at the stern of the Varsity Eight, led by stroke Sadye Levensten along with Sophia Cavalieri and Enya Gilroy. Coxswain Hattie Hopper and the bow pair of Morgan Brill and Colby Bernhard are all came up through the novice program and were former classmates at nearby Southern Columbia High School. Hayden Groves in the 5-seat is the only senior in the 1V8+, and two other novice alums in Kalena Gatesman and Abaigeal Robertson round out Bucknell's top crew.
Â
The 2V8+ is paced by junior coxswain Katie Lash and junior stroke Victoria Miller-Tuchon. Junior Logan Moore, junior Cecilia Dial, freshman Chinemere Njoku, senior Alina Kelly, junior Sierra Jordan, junior Bella Guzman, and sophomore Clara Eikeboom round out the most experienced of Bucknell's four crews.
Â
Senior Kona Glenn strokes the 1V4+ in her fourth Patriot League Championships appearance. She is joined by junior Maeve O'Keefe, freshman Evelyn Sherman, and sophomore Campbell Coonley, with sophomore coxswain Caroline Wieland setting the pace.
Â
Bucknell's first-ever Patriot League 2V4+ will be coxed by freshman Jewell Jacobs and powered by two sophomores in Smith Bumpers and Hannah Ruohoniemi and two first-years in Amelia Smith and Kennedy Narine.
Â
The Bison were last in action on May 4 at the Eastern Sprints on Lake Quinsigamond in Worcester, Mass. Competing against a large field that included five top-20 teams, Bucknell performed well and saw both of its eights win Third Level Finals. The 1V8+ won a thriller in a photo finish over Drexel. The Bison prevailed by a mere two-hundredths of a second.
Â
Bucknell has claimed two Patriot League Boat of the Week honors this spring. The 2V8+ claimed the honor on Apr. 29 after winning in tough racing conditions at the Ford Lake Cup in Ypsilanti, Mich. The 1V4+ was cited on Apr. 15 after claiming bronze medals at the Knecht Cup on the same Cooper River course that will stage this week's Patriot League Championships.
