LEWISBURG, Pa. – Bucknell's Kalena Gatesman was named to the Academic All-Patriot League Rowing Team on Thursday. It has been a big week for the junior from Medford, New Jersey, as last Friday she helped the Bison Varsity Eight claim silver medals at the Patriot League Championships, and on Tuesday she earned First Team All-Patriot League honors.
Gatesman rowed in the 1V8+ all season and helped earn two PL Boat of the Week honors. Their second-place performance at the Patriot League Championships helped Bucknell to a runner-up finish in the overall team standings. Earlier in the spring, the crew went 4-0 in double-duals against Delaware, Rhode Island, George Washington, and Lehigh, and they finished third out of 40 boats at the Knecht Cup. In the fall, the 1V8+ finished a strong 17th out of 43 teams at the Head of the Charles.
Gatesman starred in swimming and tennis at Shawnee High School before joining the Bucknell rowing team as a novice in the fall of her freshman year. She was in the Varsity Eight by the spring season and has kept her seat in the top boat ever since.
Academically, she has maintained a 3.93 cumulative GPA in Bucknell's dual degree program in mechanical engineering and management for engineers. Last summer, she interned at the U.S. Naval Research Laboratory, where she helped design, build, and test new radiator fan designs for a fuel cell heat exchanger system, which are used to power unmanned aerial vehicles. Gatesman also serves as an engineering student study group facilitator.
The Academic All-Patriot League Team was established in 2011, and Bucknell has had at least one representative on the 11-person squad in all but one year.
