Davis Breaks Bucknell Men's Lax Goals Record, but Loyola Rallies for 12-11 Overtime Win

LEWISBURG, Pa. – On a day when Connor Davis took sole possession of Bucknell's all-time goals record, Loyola spoiled the celebration by rallying for a 12-11 overtime victory on a rainy Saturday at Christy Mathewson-Memorial Stadium.
Davis had a big day with three goals and two assists, and his rip from the left flank at the 2:27 mark of the first quarter was his record-breaking 139th career goal. Davis tied Justin Zackey's school record two weeks ago against Lehigh, and now he has 141 and counting after adding two more later in the game.
Matthew Minicus recorded five goals and two assists for the Greyhounds, who won their first game in nine tries this season. Brady Quinn scored three times, and Brady West nailed the game-winner at the 2:56 mark of overtime.
Bucknell (4-6, 2-4 PL) fell behind 5-2 early in the contest before surging in front with a big six-goal second quarter. The Bison led by as many as three at 9-6 early in the third, but Loyola hung around and scored the final two goals of the fourth quarter to tie it up.
Both goalies were outstanding all day, finishing with 17 saves apiece. Bucknell's Luke Renaud made two clutch stops to keep it at 11-11 and give his team a possession inside 90 seconds to play. The Bison could not get off a clean shot, however, and Renaud was needed for one more game-saving stop on a wild sequence in the closing seconds.
Loyola defenseman Joe Houlihan picked up a ground ball near his own end line and flung it down the sideline. Renaud vacated his crease to try to get the loose ball, but it was swatted centrally to Mason Cook who had an open cage. George Talarico and Anthony Panetti did well to keep Cook from releasing a shot, and after Renaud scrambled back to his crease, he made a tough save on a clean look from Henry Haberman just before the horn.
On the overtime faceoff, Peter Grandolfo delivered a big hit just as Carson Hall nabbed the loose ball. Grandolfo nabbed the ground ball and broke into the box, but his 12-yard shot on the run was saved by Max Watkinson. That set up the game-winning goal from West off a feed from Ryan McGorry.
Bucknell trailed 5-2 after a Minicus goal 90 seconds into the second quarter, but then Will Hopkins got hot for the Bison. In a span of just 1:39, Hopkins fed Owen Kovacs for a goal and then scored two in a row himself to even the game at 5-5. Davis' second of the day gave the Bison their first lead of the day, and after Minicus knotted the game at 6-6, Grandolfo and Sean Berrigan scored two straight for an 8-6 halftime lead.
Both teams scored once in a fast-moving third quarter, and in the fourth Michael Meyer and Davis scored key goals just after Loyola had pulled within one. A harsh penalty for a push on a diving shooter led to a Minicus EMO goal with 4:02 left, and then Quinn tied it with 3:00 to go.
Bucknell led 45-39 in shots, 45-26 in ground balls, and 15-12 in faceoffs. Colin McLoy had a good day at the X, going 14-for-25 with eight ground balls.
Renaud's 17 saves were his most as a Bison. He had a 24-save game against Holy Cross when he played for UMass Lowell. Renaud also logged seven ground balls.
Bucknell returns to action on Tuesday with a non-league game at Le Moyne at 4 p.m.
