SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Playing in near blizzard conditions, the Bucknell men's lacrosse team received balanced scoring and outstanding defense and faceoff play in an 11-7 non-league win over Le Moyne on Tuesday afternoon at Ted Grant Field. Michael Meyer led the attack with two goals and three assists as the Bison improved to 5-6 on the season, while the Dolphins saw their three-game winning streak come to an end and fell to 7-4.
Heavy snow blanketed the field right from the opening faceoff and never let up, and the Le Moyne grounds crew worked hard to keep the field markings as clear as possible during breaks in play. Footing and visibility impacted play at times, but Bucknell had the better of play in the challenging conditions. The Bison outshot Le Moyne 46-29, they led 33-19 in ground balls, and Colin McLoy and company combined to go 16-for-22 on faceoffs. McLoy was 13-for-19 with eight ground balls, and Brandon Edwards (2-2) and Steven Pepe (1-1) were perfect in relief.
At the offensive end, Meyer, Peter Grandolfo, and Will Hopkins scored two goals apiece, while Jack Dudas, Luke Brunner, Cam Doolan, Sean Berrigan, and Connor Davis added one each.
Bucknell never trailed in the game, with Doolan opening the scoring just 1:24 into the contest. It was tied only once at 1-1, and back-to-back goals just over a minute apart from Grandolfo and Meyer gave the Bison the lead for good.
Bucknell led 4-2 at the end of a low-scoring first half. Thomas Berry pulled Le Moyne within a goal in the first minute of the third quarter, but then Hopkins scored twice in a row, the latter a man-up goal on a nice backdoor feed from Meyer, and the Bison led by at least two goals the rest of the way.
Bucknell broke it open with a three-goal run in the late stages of the third period and early fourth. The bench erupted when senior Jack Dudas scored his second goal of the season on a nice shot on the run from the left wing. Grandolfo scored with 34 seconds left in the third, and then Brunner made it 10-5 just 41 seconds into the fourth.
Both goalies played well despite the poor visibility. Luke Renaud made seven saves for the Bison, while Le Moyne's Lucas Winger stopped 13 shots. Bucknell held Le Moyne to 10-for-16 on clears and forced 16 total turnovers. John Young led the team with three caused turnovers, and he and Will Pickering both scooped four ground balls.
The Bison have another non-league game coming up on Saturday against Bryant. The noon contest will be played at Weldon E. Howitt Middle School on Long Island.
