Softball Edged Twice by Iona in Thursday Doubleheader

LEWISBURG, Pa.- Bucknell softball (14-26) dropped a pair of games 5-3 and 3-0 to the Iona Gaels (28-14) to complete its 2025 home slate. The Gaels used a big inning in both games to clinch the doubleheader sweep. The defeats ended Bucknell's five-game winning streak and advanced Iona's streak to nine triumphs.
Game One Recap
Savannah Jones started in the circle and the reigning Patriot League Pitcher of the Week increased her scoreless inning streak to 16 before Iona struck for a run in the third inning. Jones obtained two quick outs before Brianna Fischer singled and stole second. Hannah Werth hit a single down the left field line and Fischer sped home.
Iona added four insurance runs in the sixth inning. Madison Roukey replaced Jones and ran into trouble. Werth hit a ball to Brooke Popella at shortstop and her backhand attempt failed. Hailey Guerrero laid down a sacrifice bunt attempt and Molly Lawson's double-pump allowed both runners to reach safety. Brooke Acker singled to center field to load the bases. Sarah Pina hit a sacrifice fly to score Werth. Brianna Bailey went down swinging for the second out. Caelin Kosvitch singled down the left field line scoring another run. Alivia Lichtner hit a pop-up that MaKenzie Hilling couldn't corral and two runs scored for a 5-0 lead.
The Bison fought to the end in its final at-bats. Marissa Rapino hit a pinch-hit single. Hailey McCutchan collected her first collegiate at-bat with a pinch-hit single. Lawson's single loaded the bases. Angelina Seropian hit a sharp single, scoring Rapino. Reagan Powell pinch hit for Bella Radican but struck out swinging. Haley Speicher singled to the shortstop, tallying McCutchan. Ava Aguilar's RBI grounder scored Lawson and advanced the remaining two runners in scoring position. Jones smashed a hard liner right back to Iona's pitcher Allison Hoppe, ending the game.
Game Two Recap
The game featured a pitcher's duel with Bucknell missing multiple chances to score. Roukey started in the circle and threw five scoreless innings before a third-run sixth inning handed the game to Iona.
Bucknell's first opportunity arrived in the second inning. Hilling tripled to right field with one out. Nicole Lioumis grounded out to the pitcher and Powell struck out swinging.
The Bison's second chance arrived in the fourth inning. Jones was hit by a pitch and Popella singled. Rapino popped up and Hilling singled to load the bases. Lioumis struck out swinging and Powell popped up ending the chance.
The third attempt arrived one inning later. Speicher tripled down the right field line but Aguilar's grounder and Jones's fly out stranded the speedy center fielder.
Iona started the sixth inning with a Fischer leadoff triple. Werth hit a ball to Lioumis who looked back Fischer but her throw to first failed to beat the Iona batter. The MAAC home run leader Guerrero blasted Roukey's first pitch over the left field wall for the 3-0 lead.
Bucknell managed a walk over the last two innings, as Iona won its 28th game.
