Worcester, Mass. – The Bucknell men's lacrosse team fell in yet another heartbreaking fashion 11-10 in double overtime to Holy Cross in its Patriot League opener. The Bison had a three-goal lead 8-5 heading into the fourth quarter of play, but the Crusaders came into the final 15 minutes with vengeance as they outscored the Bison 5-2 and tied the game at 10. This would force not one, but two overtime periods of play ending in a Holy Cross game-winning goal.
Six Bison notched goals in the game with four of them having two apiece. Connor Davis added two goals to his tally, which brings him seven goals away from becoming the all-time leader in career goals at Bucknell. He came into this weekend ranked second nationally in goals per game. Other Bucknell scorers were Cam Doolan (2), Will Hopkins (2), Owen Kovacs (2), Sean Berrigan (1) and Michael Meyer (1).
Meyer, who came into this game ranked fifth nationally in assists, added two more to his tally bringing him to 16 assists on the season.
Bucknell (2-3) held multi-goal leads several times throughout the game, but an aggressive attack style coupled with fearlessness was the story for Holy Cross (3-3).
The Bison were down by one at the end of a first quarter that only saw three goals, but then turned it around to hold a multi-goal lead at the end of both the second and third quarters.
Looking comfortable heading into the fourth, Bucknell was met with a fearless shooting side from Holy Cross as they scored back-to-back goals to open the fourth quarter. The Crusaders had a good opportunity to take the win with 16 seconds left, but Luke Renaud entered the game in goal for the Bison and made a major save to force overtime.
The first overtime was a Renaud showcase as he made multiple big saves to ward off the aggressive attack from the Crusaders. In the second overtime, the Bucknell offense struggled to find an opening and Renaud couldn't hold Holy Cross off as Henry Sheehan notched the game-winning goal for the Crusaders with 3:22 remaining.
Starting goaltender Jaz Zanelli finished the game with 10 saves. Renaud came in with seconds left in the fourth quarter and notched three big saves for the Bison. The Crusaders made a lot of their offensive opportunities off of caused turnovers, having 11 to Bucknell's six.
Much like the game, both teams were close in every stat category. Bucknell outshot Holy Cross 46-41, the Bison won 12 faceoffs to the Crusaders 14 and Bucknell recorded eight assists while Holy Cross found 10.
The Bison, who came into this game with a great EMO unit that was 10-for-15, missed its two man-up opportunities. The Bison also had a handful of opportunities in the first overtime, but had a shot go wide and a turnover that prevented them from capitalizing.
Bucknell is back in action next Saturday, March 8 at 12 p.m. to host its Patriot League home opener against Boston University at Christy Mathewson-Memorial Stadium.
