LEWISBURG, Pa. – Boston University rode a red-hot extra-man unit to a 21-12 win over Bucknell in Patriot League men's lacrosse action on Saturday afternoon at Christy Mathewson-Memorial Stadium. The Terriers went 7-for-9 with a man advantage and broke open a tight game at the half with three straight goals to start the third quarter.
Connor Davis tallied three more goals for the Bison (2-4, 0-2 PL), giving him 26 in six games to start the season. Davis now has 134 career goals, four shy of Justin Zackey's school record. Owen Kovacs recorded two goals and an assist in his first career start, and Peter Grandolfo also scored twice.
Freshman Timothy Shannehan had a big day for the Terriers (5-1, 1-1 PL) with four goals and five assists. Jimmy O'Connell and Jimmy Kohr both tallied four goals and one assist, and Zach Travaglini (2-2-4) and James Corcoran (1-3-4) logged four-goal games.
Michael Meyer powered his way through a defender for the game's opening goal just 2:24 into the contest, but Boston University quickly responded with three in a row to take the lead for good. Shannehan scored just 12 seconds after the Meyer goal, and then Shannehan assisted on consecutive EMO goals to Kohr and O'Connell for a 3-1 lead.
Davis finished off a feed from Meyer to bring the Bison within one before the Terriers scored four straight to take a 7-2 lead midway through the second quarter. Bucknell got back in it with goals from Anthony Pannetti, Grandolfo, and Davis in the final 4:05 at the half and went to the locker room down only three at 8-5, but the Terriers pulled away again with three tallies in the first 4:16 of the third.
There were a combined 10 goals in both the third and fourth periods, finishing off a frantic game on a cold, windy day. Penalties were a big factor, as Bucknell was flagged 10 times to only two for Boston University. The Terriers entered the game ranked seventh nationally in man-up offense at 57.9 percent, and that figure will rise after Saturday's 7-for-9 performance.
Boston University, which was ranked in the top 20 two weeks ago before dropping its league opener to Navy, finished with a 51-39 shot advantage and a 41-28 edge in ground balls. The Terriers won 18 faceoffs to 16 for the Bison.
Four Bucknell goalies combined to make 12 saves. Luke Renaud stopped 10 shots in 38 minutes in relief. Boston University starter Will Barnes tallied 12 saves while allowing 10 goals in 55 minutes.
Bison freshmen Graham Garrigan and Luke Brennan both registered their first collegiate goals in the final minutes of the contest. Luke Brunner and Jack Tully led the team with four ground balls apiece.
Bucknell returns to action next Saturday at No. 14 Colgate at 1 p.m.
