9/20/2024 8:54:00 PM | Volleyball
LEWISBURG, Pa.- The Bucknell Bison volleyball team (9-1, 1-0 Patriot League) handled the visiting Holy Cross Crusaders (2-8, 0-1 Patriot League) in straight sets (25-20, 25-17, 25-16) Friday night to commence conference play. It was Bucknell's seventh sweep of 2024. The Bison had five players record five or more kills and were led by birthday girl Cameron Lloyd's ten kills. Three Orange & Blue members had ten or more digs with Tijana Kostic leading the way with 12.Â
Postgame Interview with Tijana Kostic & Coach Tyler Hagstrom
Bucknell outhit Holy Cross .296 to .101, amounting for the 42-31 advantage in kills. Kostic hit a blistering .412 and reigning Bison of the Week winner Sidney Shaffer averaged .353. Setter Caleigh O'Connell provided 31 assists.Â
Holy Cross came ready to play but Bucknell never trailed in the first set. The Bison steadily continued to build its lead even as the Crusaders kept within shouting distance. The Orange & Blue never went on a massive run but generally scored two points for every Holy Cross tally and ensured no Crusader rally would develop. The visitors harmed themselves with five service errors, the eventual difference in the 25-20 set win.Â
The second set was much more exciting and featured a seesaw situation of seven ties and three lead changes. Holy Cross led 1-0 and were still ahead 5-4 when Bucknell used a 6-1 run to gain the advantage. The Crusaders countered with a 3-0 stretch. Then, so did Bucknell. Holy Cross went back to the 3-0 well and then added another point for the 14-13 lead. The Bison uncorked its 2024 special weapon of a massive run to end all opposition. The 8-1 segment seized the lead and the Crusaders would never again hold the advantage in the match. A Riley Tucker kill ended the set.Â
The third period effectively ended after the opening serve. The Bison blitzed to a 9-0 start. Holy Cross temporarily halted the tide with a 5-1 run. Bucknell was not to be deterred, building its lead to double digits (23-12). The Crusaders salvaged some pride with a 3-0 run before two kills from Tucker and Kostic ended the set and game.Â
