LEWISBURG, Pa.- The sun shone brightly on Sunday and the Bucknell volleyball team was just as bright inside Davis Gym. Bucknell (8-12, 4-7 PL) swept (25-17, 31-29, 25-12) Lafayette (6-15, 0-11 PL) to snap its fourth game losing streak and resume its quest for a bid in the Patriot League Tournament.Â
The statistical sheet testified to Bucknell's dominance of its Keystone State foe. The Bison collected 47 kills to Lafayette's 33 and posted a .238 hitting percentage to the Leopards' paltry .098.Â
Three Bison finished with double-digit kills. Klea Tarja again received a starting assignment and the sophomore rewarded her coach's trust with a team-leading 13 kills. She added 11 digs for a double-double. Freshman Marion Haskell supplied 12 kills. Sidney Shaffer posted ten kills on a sizzling .400 hitting percentage. Katie O'Sullivan, the reigning Patriot League Defensive Player of the Week, rebounded with 21 digs after only notching ten yesterday against Lehigh.Â
An interesting statistical factoid rested in how neither the first or third set featured any ties or lead changed but the second stanza contained 16 ties and seven lead changes.Â
Bucknell grabbed the early lead in the opening set and never really was threatened. When the Leopards did cut the deficit to 11-10, Bucknell calmly responded with a 5-0 run. The segment jumpstarted the Orange & Blue and the Bison cruised to the 25-17 set win.Â
The second set, as mentioned, decided to be the black sheep of the match. Lafayette displayed a new burst of desperate energy and forged ahead 12-10. Bucknell came back to tie the set and then tying became the theme as both sides exchanged points like trading cards. The Bison built a 22-18 lead and looked ready for another comfortable win. Lafayette changed the script and, despite a 24-22 Bucknell set-up, forced another tie and gave the Davis Gym crowd extra volleyball. Lafayette twice had the set point but Bucknell battled back to tie the set. The squads exchanged service errors and then two Cameron Lloyd kills ended a 31-29 set win to Bucknell.Â
If the second set contained Shakespearean drama, then the third stanza was formulaic as a sitcom. Bucknell jumped out to a 9-2 lead and never looked back. Any attempt by Lafayette to start a run were ruthlessly shut down. The Bison kept stacking points and a Lafayette ball handling error handed the set and match win to the Orange & Blue.Â
Bucknell completes the home schedule next weekend with matches versus Loyola (Md.) (Oct. 30) and Navy (Oct. 31). Â
