10/25/2024 9:29:00 PM | Volleyball
BETHLEHEM, Pa.- Displaying zero rust from a scheduled bye week, the Bucknell Bison volleyball team (16-2, 8-1 Patriot) swept the surging Lehigh Mountain Hawks (12-8, 5-5 Patriot) 29-27, 25-21, 25-23 on Friday night to regain its momentum after Colgate ended the Bison's nation leading 15-game winning streak on Oct. 13.Â
The Bison won the first set 29-27 after falling behind by a touchdown deficit. The victory propelled the Bison to winning the next two sets and allowing the Orange & Blue to keep pace with Colgate for first place in the league.
Bri Frazilus's 17 kills led the Bison effort. Tijana Kostic provided ten kills and 22 digs to guide Bucknell on the offensive and defensive avenues. Caleigh O'Connell delivered 34 assists and 21 digs. Jordan Hardy gathered 28 digs increasing her career total to 1846, surpassing Army's D.J. Phee for fourth in Patriot League history and matching the year of Bucknell's founding.
The contest started dubiously for the Bison when Lehigh grabbed a 7-0 lead. The Orange & Blue continued to scrape but Lehigh reminded 6-7 points ahead for most of the set. Bucknell finally evened the score at 24-24 and took its first lead at 25-24 when Frazilus delivered a kill. Twice, the Bison went ahead seeking the set point and twice the Mountain Hawks tied the contest. Kostic ended the debate by collecting two straight kills for the 29-27 win.Â
Bucknell learned from the opening set and jumped ahead 10-6. However, Lehigh refused to follow the Bison's script and used an 8-2 run for the 14-12 lead. The squads battled evenly until it was 19-19. A 6-2 Bison run finished the set in Bucknell's favor. Three straight Frazilus kills ended the set.Â
The third set was hard fought and well-earned by the Bison. Lehigh battled hard and grabbed early leads. Bucknell was determined to complete the sweep and kept pace with the earnest Mountain Hawks. The set provided excellent volleyball as both teams traded points like baseball cards. At 19-19, Lehigh went on a 3-0 run. A 4-0 Bison run followed. Lehigh tied the set and Bucknell used a service error and a Cameron Lloyd kill to collect the set and match win.Â
