Lehigh Outlasts Bucknell Women’s Lacrosse, 17-13
4/1/2023 4:45:00 PM | Women's Lacrosse
LEWISBURG, Pa. – Lehigh scored three goals in the first six minutes of the game and was never caught on the way to a 17-13 victory over Bucknell on Saturday afternoon at warm but windy Graham Field. Emily Baird scored four goals to lead the Bison, who fell to 5-6 overall and 1-3 in the Patriot League.
Caroline Miller scored a season-high three goals and added an assist for the Bison, while Aliza Thir and Katie Browne scored twice apiece. Defender Ella Payer stuffed the stat sheet with seven ground balls – one shy of the Bucknell single-game record -- six draw controls, and four caused turnovers.
Lehigh's offensive production came almost exclusively from its attack quartet of Katia Carnevale (4G, 1A), Olivia Memeger (4G), Gabby Schneider (3G, 4A), and Emma Eberhart (3G, 2A). That group accounted for 14 of the team's 17 goals.
Lehigh (7-4, 2-3) saw most of the ball thanks to a 22-12 edge in draw controls. The disparity was once even greater, as Bucknell claimed the last five draw controls of the game.
Down 5-1, back-to-back goals from Browne and Thir narrowed the deficit to two, but the Bison were never able to get closer. Two straight goals from Carnevale and one from Eberhardt stretched Lehigh's lead to 9-4 at the half, and the Mountain Hawks would lead by as many as six on a couple of occasions in the second half.
The Bison did creep within three at 14-11 on an Alex Nesbitt goal from the 8-meter arc with 5:40 to play. Bucknell had a possession to get even closer but turned the ball over, and Lehigh responded with three straight goals to go up 17-11.
Lehigh goalie Hayley Hunt made eight saves, while Bucknell's Symone Ryans stopped seven shots. The Mountain Hawks had a 30-28 shot advantage but committed 20 turnovers to Bucknell's 14.
Baird's four-goal game was her third of the season, and she hit the 20-goal mark for the first time in her career. Bucknell extended its school record to 10 straight games scoring 10 or more goals.
The Bison now have a week off before heading to nationally ranked Army West Point next Saturday.
