Boyce’s Seven Goals Lift Women’s Lacrosse to 22-6 Win over St. Bonaventure
3/4/2023 7:02:00 PM | Women's Lacrosse
LEWISBURG, Pa. – Allie Boyce equaled her career high with seven goals, Taylor McClain handed out five more assists, and three Bucknell players scored their first career points in a dominant 22-6 win over St. Bonaventure on Saturday at Graham Field. The Bison scored eight times in the first quarter and led 14-3 at the half on the way to their third straight win.
Now 3-2 on the season, Bucknell controlled the game in all phases. The 22 goals were the team's most in four seasons, and defensively the Bison held the Bonnies (1-5) to only 14 shots and forced 16 turnovers. Bucknell doubled up St. Bonaventure 20-10 on the draw circle, with Ella Payer piling up a game-high 10 draw controls.
While Boyce matched her seven-goal game from last year's win over Colgate, it was freshman Alex Nesbitt who helped set the tone early for the Bison. Inserted into the starting lineup at attack for the first time, Nebitt assisted on the first two goals of the day, she caused two turnovers on St. Bonaventure clears that led to goals the other way, and later she scored four goals of her own for a career-high six points, all coming in the first half.
McClain's five assists give her 15 in the last three games and 19 on the season. She came into the game ranked second nationally in assists per game (3.50) and upped that mark on Saturday. In one stretch, she assisted on four straight Bucknell goals in the second quarter, and she later added a goal on an 8-meter attempt for a six-point afternoon.
Aliza Thir's second goal of the season gave Bucknell a 13-3 lead and sent the game into running-clock mode with 4:33 left in the first half. Carly Cenci added one more before intermission to make it 14-3.
In their previous two wins over Marist and Robert Morris, the Bison built large first-half leads only to see their opponent get back in the game with second-half runs. This time they kept their foot on the gas, scoring the first three goals of the third quarter. Boyce's seventh of the day upped the margin to 17-3 midway through the period, and then the reserves saw out the rest of the contest.
St. Bonaventure scored two straight early in the fourth, including the third of the day for Fiona McGovern, before a pair of Bison juniors tallied their first goals. First it was Taylor LaMantia finishing a feed from Bella Koch, and then Lewisburg native Jamie Fedorjaka scored her first two career goals. Freshman Regan Sansiviero recorded her first two collegiate points, assisting on both of Fedorjaka's goals. Colleen Kelly closed out the scoring with a nifty backhand shovel off a pass from Emily Baird.
All told, 12 different Bison scored a goal and 15 had at least one point. Bucknell finished with a 45-14 edge on the shot board and went 6-for-9 on free-position attempts.
Symone Ryans didn't face many shots but tallied four saves with only four goals against in 45 minutes of action. Freshman Julia Dembowitz came on in the fourth quarter for her collegiate debut and picked up her first save.
Bucknell is back in action next Saturday at Mount St. Mary's at 3 p.m.
