LEWISBURG, Pa. – Four different players recorded at least five points to lift the Bucknell men's lacrosse team to a 19-16 victory over Lafayette on Friday night at Christy Mathewson-Memorial Stadium at the Pascucci Family Athletics Complex.
In a high-scoring affair, Harry Wellford (5g-1a), Connor Davis (5g-1a), Dutch Furlong (3g-2a) and Jack Feda (2g-3a) led the Bison (9-4, 3-4 PL) to a Senior Night triumph over the Leopards (4-10, 1-7 PL).
After Lafayette's Peter Lehman netted three of his five goals in the third quarter's first four minutes to even the score at 9-9, Bucknell responded with a four-strike run to build a 13-9 lead. The Leopards regrouped, netting the quarter's next two goals to trim the Bison's edge to 13-11. With 41 seconds left in that frame, Furlong gave Bucknell a three-goal cushion. Though the teams traded strikes the rest of the contest, Lafayette would never again draw closer than three goals.
The Bison and Leopards combined for 35 goals, which is tied for the second-highest combined total in Bucknell's history behind 36 in a 24-12 loss to then No. 6 Towson in 1990. The Bison's 16 goals allowed is their second-highest figure given up in a win behind an 18-17 overtime victory over Gettysburg in 1983.
For Lafayette, Charlie Cunniffe (6g-2a) and Lehman (5g-1a) had strong offensive performances. Aidan Kelly won 18 faceoffs and collected a game-best 10 ground balls.
Bucknell's Danny Striano filled the stat sheet with a goal, seven ground balls and a caused turnover. His goal capped the Bison's 4-0 run that garnered them their 13-9 advantage.
Alston Tarry also had a strong game, posting three points (2g-1a), collecting six ground balls and causing two turnovers. Nick Crovatto won 19-of-32 faceoffs and scooped up a team-high eight ground balls.
On the strength of his five-goal outing, Davis now has 43 on his standout freshman season. He vaulted to fifth in school history in single-season goals and became the sixth Bison to register at least 40 in a single campaign. With 35 goals in 2022, Furlong is now a hat trick shy of joining Davis in Bucknell's single-season top 10.
Tarry improved his career points total to 136, seven shy of cracking the Bison's career top-10 list.
Crovatto's 155 faceoff wins this season is third in school history. He has 85 ground balls in 2022, good for fourth in the program annals. Overall, he has 159 career ground balls, which slots him sixth in Bucknell's history.
The Bison led in shots (50-34), shots on goal (30-26), ground balls (40-33) and faceoffs (21-18). Both teams struggled with turnovers, combining for 36. They also combined for only 21 saves on the evening.
Before the game, Bucknell honored its 12 seniors: Crovatto, Tarry, Wellford, Matthew Barkauskas, Reid Delanois, Frankie Higgins, Jared Hodell, Brenden Lundy, Travis Talarico, Zach Tucker, Jack Van Slyke and Drew Wellington. Barkauskas, Crovatto, Talarico and Wellford have served as captains this year.
The Bison next close the regular season with a 7 p.m. game at Navy on Friday, April 29. Because of their win over Lafayette, they can clinch a spot in the Patriot League Tournament with a Colgate loss to Loyola this Saturday.
