ANNAPOLIS, Md. – The Bucknell men's lacrosse team closed the regular season with a 13-6 loss at Navy on Friday night at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium.
In a game that proved a defensive battle until its final five minutes, the Midshipmen (9-5, 5-3 PL) held the Bison (9-5, 3-5 PL) to their lowest scoring output of the 2022 campaign en route to their hard-fought victory. Bucknell will be the sixth seed in the upcoming Patriot League Tournament and will travel to third-seeded Loyola (Md.) for a 3 p.m. quarterfinal game on Tuesday, May 3.
The Bison erased a 5-2 halftime deficit by scoring three unanswered goals, netted by Jack Feda, Andrew Stanzel and Harry Wellford, in the third quarter's first six minutes. Following Wellford's equalizer, Navy's Pat Ryan denied back-to-back point-blank bids by Alston Tarry and C.J. Baroni to preserve the tie.
After a Wellford shot was blocked, the Midshipmen rushed back the other way. Their initial shot hit the post, but Max Hewitt came up with the rebound and fed Nick Cole for a goal, halting Bucknell's run with 2:31 left in the third frame.
Cole's goal ultimately kicked off a 7-0 Navy run, with four of those goals coming in the fourth quarter's final five minutes. Bucknell's final strike came with 59 seconds remaining in regulation, snapping a scoring drought of nearly 25 minutes.
For the Bison, Jack Van Slyke was sensational in his first collegiate start. The senior turned aside 12 shots, many from point-blank range. Wellford netted two goals while Hank Bethel, Reid Delanois and Andrew Stanzel each caused two turnovers and were among a group of six players who collected three ground balls.
With his goal, Connor Davis wrapped up the regular season with 44. He moved into a tie for third in school history and needs just two more strikes to claim sole possession of second place.
Nick Crovatto's nine faceoff wins moved his season total to 164, claiming him second in school history. He will enter the Patriot League Tournament needing just seven wins to break Jarett Witzal's standard of 171, set in 2016. By collecting three ground balls, Crovatto improved his season total to 88. While he remained fourth in school history, he is eight shy of Bucknell's third spot and two away from becoming the fourth Bison to record at least 90 in a single campaign.
With his two assists, Tarry improved his career point total to 138, five shy of cracking Bucknell's career top-10 list in this statistical category.
For the Midshipmen, Pat Ryan turned aside 16 of 21 Bison shots, a sterling save percentage of .762. Nate Hammond won 10 of the 16 faceoffs he took and collected a game-best six ground balls.
Nine different Midshipmen scored at least one goal, with Henry Tolker leading the way with a hat trick.
Navy held slim advantages in shots (48-42), shots on goal (25-22), ground balls (41-33) and faceoffs (13-9). The Midshipmen, who ran their winning streak over the Bison to six games, became the first non-nationally ranked team to defeat them this season and the fourth to hold them to 10 or fewer goals.
