BALTIMORE – The Bucknell men's lacrosse team gave third-seeded Loyola (Md.) a battle but ceded an 11-7 decision in the Patriot League Tournament quarterfinals on Tuesday at the Ridley Athletic Complex.
For the majority of their contest, the sixth-seeded Bison (9-6, 3-5 PL) were even or ahead of the Greyhounds (8-7, 6-2 PL), who finished tied for second in the Patriot League regular-season standings. The teams were locked in a 7-7 tie entering the fourth quarter, and Loyola ultimately scored four unanswered goals in that frame to earn its meeting with second-seeded Army West Point in Friday's Patriot League semifinals.
Bucknell's goalies and defense impressed against a strong Greyhound offense. Rich O'Halloran stopped nine of the 14 shots he faced while Jack Van Slyke made seven saves in relief after the standout freshman suffered an injury near the second quarter's end that forced him to exit the game. Notably, the Bison forced 13 turnovers and netted two of their goals in transition.
For Loyola, Davis Lindsey registered six points on two goals and four helpers, critically assisting on the decisive fourth quarter's first three goals. Bailey Savio's performance in the faceoff x was equally key to the Greyhounds' tight triumph; he won 14-of-22 faceoffs and collected a game-best 10 ground balls. Cam Wyers also filled the stat sheet with six ground balls and two caused turnovers.
At the end of the first quarter, the teams were tied at 3-3. Cam Doolan and Dutch Furlong then found the back of the net at the second quarter's 13:05 and 7:36 marks respectively, with Doolan's coming from downtown and Furlong's coming off a seeing-eye Joe Scattareggia feed in transition.
The Greyhounds responded with two goals in a 1:06 span to tie the game at 5-5. After Travis Talarico found Danny Striano for Bucknell's second transition strike with 1:49 remaining before the intermission, Van Slyke made two point-blank saves in the final 13 seconds to maintain his team's 6-5 edge.
The teams spent the third quarter's first nine minutes in a defensive stalemate. After Loyola broke through with 6:41 on the clock to even the score at 6-6, Nick Crovatto found the back of the net off a faceoff win six seconds later to regain the Bison's advantage. The Greyhounds ultimately scored the third quarter's final goal to send the teams into the final frame in their 7-7 tie.
In the fourth quarter, three of Loyola's four goals came in a three-minute window between the 10:06 and 7:40 marks. Sam Shafer, who made 13 saves overall, stopped all three of Bucknell's shots in that frame to help his team emerge victorious.
Seven different Bison netted a goal, with Furlong also registering an assist to finish with a team-best two points. Striano filled the stat sheet with a goal, a caused turnover and three ground balls while Frankie Higgins caused a game-high three turnovers and collected two ground balls.
With his first-quarter goal, Connor Davis finished his rookie campaign with 45, a total tied for second in school history. He is the sixth Bison to net at least 40 goals in a single campaign, joining Justin Zackey (63 in 1993, 44 in 1994), Jon Romm (45 in 1990), Jim Ball (44 in 1979), Sean O'Brien (42 in 2018) and John Golaszewski (41 in 1998).
With his eight faceoff wins on the day, Crovatto wrapped up the 2022 campaign with 172, one more than the previous school record set by Jarett Witzal in 2016. His total of 91 ground balls slotted him fourth in the Bucknell annals; in his career, he collected 165, good for fifth in the Bison record book. Crovatto, who is one of three Bison to win at least 300 faceoffs, finished his career with 338 victories.
The Greyhounds held leads in shots (44-38), shots on goal (27-20), ground balls (33-20) and faceoffs (14-8). Both teams went 0-for-1 on the man advantage; they were nearly even in turnovers, at 13 for the Greyhounds and 12 for the Bison.
In 2022, Bucknell shattered its school records in goals (203), assists (127) and points (330), bolstered by having Furlong (36g-20a-56p), Alston Tarry (32g-21a-53p) and Patriot League Rookie of the Year Davis (45g-7a-52p) all eclipse 50 points individually. The previous standards of 179 goals, 108 assists and 287 points were all set 10 years earlier in 2012.
