Women’s Lax Win Streak Halted by Campbell, 16-11
3/7/2022 5:38:00 PM | Women's Lacrosse
SPARKS, Md. – Laurel McHale tallied three goals and two assists, and Emma Cashwell also recorded a hat trick, but the Bucknell women's lacrosse team saw its three-game winning streak come to an end with a 16-11 setback against Campbell on Monday afternoon at Tierney Field at the USA Lacrosse Headquarters outside Baltimore.
Sam Bischoff and Joslin Hanbury scored three times each, and Ally Heath had a goal and three assists to lead the high-scoring Fighting Camels, who improved to 3-2 on the season.
Campbell made good use of a few timely scoring runs and led the game for the final 41 minutes. The contest was knotted at 2-2 after one quarter, but with rain falling and the wind gusting, the Fighting Camels scored the first four goals of the second quarter to build a 6-2 lead.
Bucknell fought back with a 3-1 run to end the half, and Katie Wendell's goal off a nice feed from Phoebe Macleod with 12 seconds left made it a 7-5 game at intermission.
After Campbell scored the first two goals of the second half, Cashwell scored off a Tatumn Kohlbrenner feed, and then Cashwell thought she had another when she beat the goalie and the ball appeared to cross the line, but the goal was not given. Bucknell then took a non-releasable yellow card on the ensuing clear, and Campbell scored twice with the extra player to go up 11-6.
Another key moment came late in the third quarter. Consecutive goals from Cashwell and Carly Cenci brought the Bison back within 12-9, and they had the ball playing for the final shot of the period in the final 30 seconds. But an errant pass came all the way out to Campbell at the restraining line, and Rasa Welsh scored on the fastbreak with 21 seconds left. The Fighting Camels won the ensuing draw control and then Bischoff scored a back-breaker with three seconds on the clock to make it 14-9.
Caroline Miller and McHale scored early in the fourth to bring the Bison within three again, but just 31 seconds after the McHale goal, Bischoff scored her third of the day for Campbell.
Campbell finished with a 36-24 shot advantage and saw more of the ball thanks to a 20-11 edge in draw controls. Julianna Sanchez logged 11 draw controls to go along with two goals and an assist. Ella Payer tallied five draw controls for Bucknell, and she also had three ground balls and two caused turnovers.
Both teams struggled with turnovers in the blustery conditions, as Campbell committed 18 miscues and Bucknell 17.
The Bison (3-2) used all three goalies in the game. Caitlin Tucker started and finished with nine saves. Colleen Kazanjian made two fourth-quarter saves in relief, and Symone Ryans also saw time at the start of the third quarter. Emma Strickland made five saves for Campbell.
Bucknell returns home to face UMBC on Saturday at 1 p.m. at Graham Field. The game will be streamed live on ESPN+.
