Bucknell at a Glance
- The Bison saw their three-game winning streak come to an end on Monday, when they fell 16-11 to Campbell at the USA Lacrosse Headquarters in Sparks, Md. Bucknell now looks to rebound with two straight home games to close out the non-league portion of the schedule. The Bison host UMBC this weekend and then will make up an earlier postponement against Binghamton on Wednesday afternoon at Graham Field.
- Laurel McHale paced the offense with three goals and two assists in the Campbell game, and she leads the team in goals (15), assists (6), and points (21). McHale ranks in the top-10 in the Patriot League in all three categories: fourth in goals per game, fifth in points per game, and tied for ninth (with teammate Katie Wendell) in assists per game.
- Wendell and freshman Allie Boyce have also reached double figures with 10 goals through five games. Tatumn Kohlbrenner has eight along with three assists.
- Emma Cashwell recorded a hat trick against Campbell, doubling her season goal total.
- Thirteen Bison have recorded at least one goal and 14 have at least one point thus far.
- Boyce was named the Patriot League Rookie of the Week on Monday after producing back-to-back hat tricks in wins over Duquesne and St. Bonaventure.
- Bucknell ranks fourth in the Patriot League in scoring at 13.2 goals per game, and the Bison lead the league in assists with 7.2 per game. Bucknell also ranks second in the league behind Navy in shots per game (32.4).
- Defensively, Bucknell leads the Patriot League with 13.0 caused turnovers per game, and the Bison are second to Navy in ground balls per game (19.8).
- Ella Payer (2.2) and Abby Neff (1.8) rank 1-2 in the league in caused turnovers per game. Caroline Miller (1.6), Emily Baird (1.4), and Cashwell (1.2) also rank in the top 10.
- Neff (2.6) and Payer (2.2) rank third and fifth in ground balls per game, and Payer (5.3) ranks fifth in draw controls.
- Bucknell's 66 goals through five games are the second-most in team history. The 2016 team logged 79 in the first five games.
- The Bison went 3-6 during an abbreviated 2021 spring season. The wins came over Lafayette, American, and Colgate, all at home.
- Bucknell was picked to finish eighth in the Patriot League preseason poll. Loyola was tabbed the preseason favorite, followed by Navy, Army, Lehigh, Boston University, Colgate, Holy Cross, Bucknell, American, and Lafayette.
- The Bison returned nine starters, including three of the top four scorers and the bulk of the defensive unit, from last year's squad.
- Seniors Cashwell and Macris, along with junior Payer, have been named captains for the 2022 season. Macris is in her second year as a captain.
- Payer is Bucknell's lone returning All-Patriot League selection. She earned the honor as a sophomore after leading the team with 24 draw controls while playing strong defense. Midfielder Mason Rode, who graduated last spring, joined Payer on the All-PL Second Team.
- Senior attackers McHale and Wendell are the top returning scorers. McHale tallied a team-high 18 points on 11 goals and seven assists last season, while Wendell logged five goals and a team-high 12 assists.
- Head coach Jackie Dando is in her third season as Bucknell's head coach. Each of the first two were disrupted by the COVID-19 pandemic, however. Former Colgate star Haley O'Hanlon and Veronica John have joined the staff as assistant coaches.
- The Retrievers are 3-3 through six games after falling to local rival Towson 19-12 at home on Wednesday. UMBC started 3-1, including blowout wins over Longwood, American, and George Washington, but have now dropped back-to-back games against No. 18 Temple and Towson.
- UMBC has outscored its opponents 86-60, with junior Claire Bockstie (25-7-32) leading the attack. Bocksie leads the America East and ranks 11th nationally with 25 goals, and her 10.8 shot attempts per game are second-most in the nation.
- Dymin Gerow (19-8-27) and Kolby Weedon (16-2-18) are other top scorers for the Retrievers. That attack trio has accounted for 61 of the team's 86 goals.
- Â Megan Halczuk leads the team with 28 draw controls, while Kelly Brown and Avery Corino share the team lead in ground balls with 16 apiece.
- Lexi Roberts has started five games in goal, while Isabella Fontana has one start and two other relief appearances. Fontana has a .595 save percentage to Roberts' .476.
- UMBC was picked second behind Stony Brook in the America East preseason poll. The Retrievers returned their top four scorers from last season's 6-6 squad, with Bockstie leading the way with 42 goals and 50 points.
- UMBC holds a 9-5 lead in a series that dates back to 187. The two teams last met just before the pandemic in 2019 and 2020. Bucknell won a thriller at Graham Field in 2019, 11-10 in overtime. Sarah Dohler scored the game-winning goal, and Jamisen DeWitt made three of her 15 saves in extra time. Bucknell rallied from a 9-5 deficit in the final 16 minutes of regulation, with Tace Sutherland forcing OT with a goal with just 0.6 remaining.
- UMBC returned the favor the following season with a 13-9 win in Baltimore. Â Â
Looking Ahead
