Bucknell Women’s Lacrosse Wins Thriller over Colgate 15-14

LEWISBURG, Pa. – Caroline Miller's shorthanded goal with 39 seconds remaining – set up by a feed from Laurel McHale and a critical draw control from Ella Payer -- gave the Bucknell women's lacrosse team a dramatic 15-14 victory over Patriot League rival Colgate on Wednesday evening at Graham Field.
The Bison won their second straight Patriot League home game to improve to 5-5 overall and 2-1 in conference play. The thrilling victory also featured a record-setting night from rookie attacker Allie Boyce, who equaled the Bucknell freshman scoring record with seven goals.
Hall-of-Famer Sue Gray holds the overall team record with 10 goals against Northeastern as a senior in 1984. Seven goals is the next-highest tally in the books, and Boyce became the seventh Bison to hit that mark. The only other Bucknell freshman to record seven goals in a game was Anne Kennedy against Dickinson in 1979.
Boyce was coming off a five-goal game in Saturday's win over Lafayette and now has 12 in her last two outings and a team-high 25 on the season. Emma Cashwell added three goals and two assists and Katie Wendell scored a pair for the Bison, who have now beaten Colgate in back-to-back seasons for the first time ever.
Boyce's seven goals came on only eight shots, and the last of those broke a 13-13 tie with 4:40 to play in the game. After the Raiders claimed the ensuing draw control – they won 25 of 33 on the night – Bison defender Eva Macris checked the ball away from Catie Lang on the left flank with 3:19 remaining.
Bucknell turned it back over in the offensive zone, however, and during Colgate's clear Boyce was shown a yellow card for a foul near midfield. Even worse, it was the team's fourth yellow card of the game, meaning it was a non-releasable two-minute penalty with 1:52 left on the clock.
Colgate took advantage of the extra player when Cara O'Reilly fed Eliza Soutter for the tying goal with 1:07 to play. The Raiders had a 25-6 lead in draw controls at that point, but Payer cleanly won the biggest one of the night with her team shorthanded. With their leading scorer in the penalty box, the Bison worked the ball around to McHale behind the cage, and after making a tough catch McHale popped out to the right side of goal and found a cutting Miller who finished from close range.
The Bison still had plenty of work left to do with 39 seconds to go. Bucknell earned another late draw control when Cashwell was fouled while vying for the loose ball. After a timeout, Cashwell passed back to Tatumn Kohlbrenner near Bucknell's defensive restraining line, and the quick Bison middie ran around, through, and under no fewer than 10 Colgate chasers before eventually passing back to Cashwell behind the goal as the final seconds melted away.
Despite Colgate's decided advantage in draw controls and time of possession, Bucknell led for most of the game. The Raiders jumped out to a 2-0 lead before Cashwell tied it with back-to-back tallies. It was 3-3 after one period when Boyce, Kohlbrenner, and Wendell all scored in a 3-0 run that gave the Bison a 6-3 lead.
Colgate pulled within 8-7 by halftime and tied it at 8-8 on a Soutter goal 52 seconds into the third quarter, but then Boyce got rolling. After the Raiders won 18 of the first 19 draws, Bucknell finally captured three in a row, and that helped lead to three straight Boyce unassisted goals in a span of just 3:15. The first of those was a dandy, when she trail-checked a Colgate player at the top of the box and then scored on a clean breakaway.
Bucknell later led 13-9 on a Taylor McClain goal from a Cashwell feed 50 seconds into the fourth period. But the Raiders chipped away and finally tied it at 13-13 on Lang's goal with 7:16 to play, setting up the wild finish.
Colgate outshot the Bison 30-28 in the game, but the Bison countered with an 18-12 edge in ground balls and a stellar 22-for-23 performance on clears. Macris collected three of Bucknell's 10 caused turnovers, and freshman goalie Colleen Kazanjian tallied eight saves.
Soutter, Devon Maillet, and Lucy Licata all had hat tricks for Colgate, while Kyra Lucey recorded a goal and four assists. O'Reilly and Grace Bowers finished with nine draw controls each, and Maillet nabbed six. The Raiders used two goalies in the game. Starter Kieran Gerow saved five shots while allowing seven in 27 minutes, and Amelia Cunningham made two saves while conceding eight goals in the final 33 minutes.
The Bison are now 4-2 at home this season but will head on the road for three of the next four. Next up is a trip to Lehigh this Saturday at noon.

Here's a look at the winning sequence, as seen on @PatriotLeagueTV. Colgate had dominated the draw controls all day, but Ella Payer wins this critical possession with the Bison down a player. I'll take that! Allie Boyce breaks an 8-8 tie with this sensational play. She then adds two more right after, giving her 6 goals on the day and the Bison an 11-8 lead. #rayBucknell | #PLTop3 | cc: @PatriotLeagueTV
