Bucknell at a Glance
- The Bison will be looking to build on Saturday's 16-9 victory over Lafayette with two more key Patriot League matchups on tap this week. The Bison host Colgate on Wednesday evening, followed by a trip to Lehigh on Saturday.
- Bucknell snapped a four-game losing streak and evened its Patriot League record at 1-1 with a strong all-around effort against the Leopards. The Bison ran out to a 13-3 advantage and led 13-4 at halftime. Lafayette made a run in the third quarter to pull within 13-9, but the Bison tightened back up defensively and shut out the Leopards in the fourth quarter.
- Bucknell had stellar performances all over the field on Saturday. Senior Abby Neff led a strong defensive effort with five caused turnovers, and she was named the Patriot League Defensive Player of the Week for the second time this season.
- Freshman goalie Colleen Kazanjian finished with 10 saves on the way to her first career win.
- Bucknell controlled the draw circle by an 18-11 margin. Emma Cashwell led the way with six draw controls, and she also recorded four goals and an assist. Her two goals 1:12 apart in the fourth quarter ended Bucknell's long scoring drought and gave the team some breathing room.
- Freshman attacker Allie Boyce had another big day with a career-high five goals along with an assist. The two Taylors – Kopan (3-1-4) and McClain (1-3-4) – both had four-point games in their first career starts. McClain's goal was the first of her career. Caroline Miller (1-2-3) and Katie Wendell (2-0-2) also had multi-point games.
- Neff now ranks second in the Patriot League in ground balls per game (2.56) and third in caused turnovers per game (1.56). Ella Payer continues to lead the league in caused turnovers (1.78), and as a team, the Bison lead the league in that category at 10.89 per game.
- The Bison on Saturday returned to their stellar defensive form from earlier in the month. In a three-game winning streak against Robert Morris, Duquesne, and St. Bonaventure, Bucknell conceded a total of only 21 goals (7.0 per game). But over the previous four games, opponents tallied 71 goals (17.8 per game). Bucknell is now 4-0 on the season when allowing single-digit goals.
- Laurel McHale continues to lead the Bison in goals (19) and points (25). Boyce closed the gap with her five-goal game against Lafayette, and she is one behind McHale with 18. Boyce has at least one goal in every game this season.
- The Bison went 3-6 during an abbreviated 2021 spring season. The wins came over Lafayette, American, and Colgate, all at home.
- Bucknell was picked to finish eighth in the Patriot League preseason poll. Loyola was tabbed the preseason favorite, followed by Navy, Army, Lehigh, Boston University, Colgate, Holy Cross, Bucknell, American, and Lafayette.
- The Bison returned nine starters, including three of the top four scorers and the bulk of the defensive unit, from last year's squad.
- Seniors Cashwell and Eva Macris, along with junior Payer, have been named captains for the 2022 season. Macris is in her second year as a captain.
- Payer is Bucknell's lone returning All-Patriot League selection. She earned the honor as a sophomore after leading the team with 24 draw controls while playing strong defense. Midfielder Mason Rode, who graduated last spring, joined Payer on the All-PL Second Team.
- Head coach Jackie Dando is in her third season as Bucknell's head coach. Each of the first two were disrupted by the COVID-19 pandemic, however. Former Colgate star Haley O'Hanlon and Veronica John have joined the staff as assistant coaches.
- The Raiders are 2-8 overall but 1-1 in the Patriot League. Colgate won at Boston University 13-7 on March 19, then fell to Army 20-12 at home on Saturday.
- Bucknell and Colgate faced two common non-conference opponents. Both teams defeated St. Bonaventure and both lost to Binghamton.
- The Raiders have had balanced scoring this season, with six players scoring between 11-15 goals. Kyra Lucey leads the squad with 15 goals, nine assists, and 24 points, followed closely by Catie Lang (14-9-23).
- Despite a 2-8 record, Colgate has dominated at the draw circle this season. The Raiders have a 167-107 edge on their opponents in that category, with Cara O'Reilly (64), Grace Bowers (46), and Devon Maillet (30) accounting for most of their production. O'Reilly ranks third in the league with 6.4 DCs per game.
- Amelia Cunningham and Kieran Gerow have both seen considerable action in goal. Cunningham has the better numbers with a .436 save percentage and a 14.42 goals-against average.
- Colgate has a 36-5 lead in the all-time series dating back to 1981. Bucknell did win the most recent meeting, 13-11 last season, and has won two of the last four.
- Last year on Senior Day at Graham Field, Emma Cashwell scored four second-half goals, including three in a row in a span of less than five minutes, to help the Bison to the 13-11 win. Cashwell's third tally gave Bucknell a 13-7 lead with 14:52 to go. Colgate pulled within 13-11 before Mason Rode won a critical draw control that allowed the Bison to essentially run out the clock. Laurel McHale added a hat trick for the Bison, while Noelle Patterson led Colgate with four goals. Â
- The Mountain Hawks are 3-6 overall and 0-2 in the Patriot League heading into a Wednesday road trip to West Point. Lehigh has faced a difficult start to league play, with its first three games coming against No. 7 Loyola, No. 17 Navy, and an Army team that is receiving votes in the national poll.
- Lehigh led 6-4 at the half at Navy on Saturday, but the Mids outscored them 7-1 in the second half. Emma Eberhardt's goal gave the Mountain Hawks a 7-5 lead with 11:18 left in the third quarter before Navy ended the game on a 6-0 run.
- Lehigh ranks third in the Patriot League allowing only 11.1 goals per game. Much of that success can be attributed to strong goalie play, as Stony Brook transfer Hayley Hunt leads the league in saves per game (13.1) and save percentage (.554). Hunt made 17 saves against Navy on Saturday
- Offensively, Gabby Schneider has a league-high 22 assists to go along with her 18 goals. Her 40 points are third-most in the league. Schneider, a First Team All-Patriot League and Second Team All-Region selection last season, has multiple assists in seven of her nine games and has also scored four or more goals three times this year.
- Eberhardt (18-14-32), Katia Carnevale (20-5-25), and Olivia Memeger (15-4-19) are other top scorers. Eberhardt leads the team with 48 draw controls.
- Lehigh went 9-4 overall and 6-1 in the Patriot League last season. The Mountain Hawks beat Navy twice, including an overtime thriller in the Patriot League Tournament quarterfinals, and they went on to advance to the championship game where they fell to Loyola 11-6.
- Lehigh has won 33 of the 44 previous meetings in the series with Bucknell, including the last 12 in a row. The Mountain Hawks won 20-7 last season in Bethlehem behind a six-goal day from Eberhardt. Mason Rode led the Bison with three goals.
- Bucknell's last series win was a 12-11 triple-overtime thriller in Bethlehem in 2009. The Bison trailed 11-7 with 17:37 left in regulation before scoring the game's final five goals. Bonnie Buechel tallied the game-winner in overtime.
- Lehigh won the first 19 series meetings, but then Bucknell posted eight straight wins and won 11 of 13 against Lehigh from 1997-2009.
- Following the two games this week, Bucknell returns home to face Army on Apr. 9 at 3 p.m.
