BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The Bucknell women's lacrosse team had five players score multiple goals, but host Lehigh used a big second half to rally past the Bison 16-11 on Saturday afternoon at the Ulrich Sports Complex.
Bucknell saw its two-game winning streak come to an end and fell to 5-6 overall and 2-2 in Patriot League play. Lehigh, a reigning Patriot League Tournament finalist, improved to 4-7 overall and 1-3 in the league. The Mountain Hawks had faced a tough early Patriot League slate, with their losses coming to title contenders Loyola, Navy, and Army.
Emma Cashwell, Tatumn Kohlbrenner, Phoebe Macleod, Laurel McHale, and Taylor Kopan all scored two goals as part of a balanced scoring attack. Bucknell dominated the draw controls by a 22-9 count, led by a career-high nine from Ella Payer, but Lehigh goalie Hayley Hunt helped offset that disparity by making 12 saves, including eight in the second half.
The Bison were looking good early after a couple of three-goal runs. Two straight tallies by Cashwell and another from McHale gave Bucknell an early 4-2 lead, and the Bison led 5-3 after a high-scoring first quarter thanks to Macleod's goal off a Kohlbrenner feed in the final minute.
Lehigh rallied to tie it up at 5-apiece, but consecutive strikes from Macleod, Kohlbrenner, and Kopan provided the Bison with their largest lead of the day at 8-5 with 4:18 to go in the second quarter.
Lehigh scored two important goals 32 seconds apart in the late stages of the half to pull within 8-7 at intermission, and then the Mountain Hawks outscored the Bison 9-3 in the second half.
Bucknell led 9-8 after McHale fed Taylor McClain for a goal at the 12:07 mark of the third quarter before Lehigh responded with a four-goal run bridging the quarter break. It was just a two-goal game after Kopan's goal with 6:43 to go in the fourth, but Lehigh tacked on the final three goals to pull away.
Gabby Schneider scored five goals to lead the Mountain Hawks, who finished with a 27-25 shot advantage. Olivia Memeger and Nora Giordano added three goals apiece.
In addition to Payer's nine draw controls, Cashwell and Caitlin McHale collected six apiece. Colleen Kazanjian finished with four saves.
After playing three games in the last seven days, Bucknell will now have a week off before hosting Army next Saturday at 3 p.m.
