Women’s Lacrosse Takes Down First-Place Army, 18-12

LEWISBURG, Pa. – Boosted by an 8-1 second-half run, the Bucknell women's lacrosse team turned in a complete effort at both ends of the field and knocked off Patriot League-leading Army 18-12 on Saturday afternoon at Graham Field at Holmes Stadium. The Black Knights came into the game a perfect 5-0 in league play and 10-3 overall, but the Bison never trailed in the game and improved to 6-6 overall and 3-2 in the conference.
Tatumn Kohlbrenner and Allie Boyce scored four goals each, and Taylor Kopan and Emma Cashwell added three apiece to pace a patient and hot-shooting attack. Kopan set the tone by scoring Bucknell's first three goals of the day, and the Bison went on to record 18 goals on 31 shots in the game. Boyce added two assists for a six-point game, Katie Wendell tallied a pair of goals, and Taylor McClain logged a goal and two assists.
Army entered the day leading the Patriot League in scoring at 15.8 goals per game, including a stout 19.0 per game in conference play. The Bison limited the Black Knights to 12 in this one, with the last three coming in the final 3:05 after Bucknell had taken a commanding 18-9 lead.
Led by eight from Cashwell, the Bison won the draw control battle 19-15, which helped lead to a significant edge in time of possession. Goalie Caitlin Tucker made nine saves in goal in her return from injury, and defenders Abby Neff (3) and Eva Macris (2) combined for five caused turnovers.
Julia Gorajek paced Army with four goals and three assists, but the Bison kept 41-goal scorer Jolie Riedell off the scoresheet. Riedell, who scored four goals in Army's 19-8 win over Bucknell last season, was the Patriot League goal-scoring leader entering the day, and she was surpassed by Gorajek who now has 43.
"I thought the key to the game was the play of our defense and how they prepared all week and really stuck to the game plan," said head coach Jackie Dando. "Army has some terrific scorers, but Emily Baird was incredible face-guarding Riedell, and the defense as a whole did a great job sliding to their shooters. We won more than 50 percent of the draws, which was huge, and offensively we shot the ball very well and showed great patience."
The momentum-shifting stretch in the game occurred late in the second quarter. Army had just tied the game at 6-6 with a three-goal run, but with 4:14 left in the half Kohlbrenner weaved through traffic and shot past Army goalie Lacey Bartholomay to give the Bison the lead for good. Kohlbrenner followed with another unassisted tally on the next possession, and then with just 12 seconds left in the half Kopan fed Wendell for a fastbreak goal to make it 9-6 at intermission.
Army's only previous losses came at nationally ranked Temple and Rutgers to start the season and to Yale on the road earlier this week.
Bucknell finished with a 31-26 shot advantage. The Bison committed only 12 turnovers and went 13-for-14 on clears and 3-for-5 on free-position attempts. Army had beaten Bucknell three straight times dating back to Bucknell's last series win in 2017.
The Bison have four games left in the regular season, with three of them on the road. Next up is a trip to American next Saturday at 1 p.m.

Bucknell's lead was 10-8 midway through the third quarter, but a terrific feed from Boyce to Cashwell ignited the game-changing 8-1 run. Wendell and Kohlbrenner both scored in the final minute of the third quarter to make it 14-9, and then Boyce ripped the net three straight times in the fourth.
