LEWISBURG, Pa. – The Bucknell University baseball team split its final day of home Patriot League competition on Sunday against Holy Cross, winning the first game 6-1 before falling in a tightly-contested, 7-6 contest to the Crusaders in the second game of the day.
Bucknell now stands at 6-2 in Patriot League games through eight contests, and improved to 6-4 at Depew Field this season.
Game One: Bucknell 6, Holy Cross 1
Bucknell used a three-run first inning, all with two outs, to take firm control of the first game of the series. Tyler Dunn cleared the bases with a deep triple to left center, and senior pitcher Austin Odell threw his second straight seven-inning complete game victory as Bucknell took its third game of the weekend.
Walks from Anthony Sherwin and Mason Kelly and a single from Jacob Corson loaded the bases for the Bison with two outs, which set up Dunn's bases-clearing shot to left center to give the Bison an early 3-0 advantage.
Holy Cross used an RBI single from Connor Cooney that scored Sam Kirkpatrick to trim the Bison lead to 3-1, but starter Odell limited the Crusaders to just two hits the rest of the way in another solid performance on Sunday. The senior has now gone at least seven innings three times this season, and tied his season best with five strikeouts on Sunday.
Bucknell added an insurance run in the fourth when Lowery opened up the inning with a single. A walk from Logan Kellerman and a flyout moved Lowery to third base, before heads-up baserunning by the senior scored Bucknell's fourth run of the frame on a wild pitch.
Lowery provided the opening spark for Bucknell's two-run sixth that helped seal the win, singling with a well-placed bunt to start the inning. Bucknell did its damage with two outs once again in the frame, as three straight singles from Kyle Lyons, Sherwin, and Grant Voytovich loaded the bases. Lyons' single scored Lowery, while Corson drew a walk after the three singles loaded the bases for Bucknell's final run of the inning.
Bucknell managed eight hits in the contest, with Lowery providing Bucknell's only multi-hit outing in a 2-for-2 effort with two runs scored. Dunn's three RBIs were one shy of his career-high four set at Radford on February 25.
Game Two: Holy Cross 7, Bucknell 6
The Bison fought back from an early 7-1 deficit, getting two runners on in the bottom of the ninth after pulling within one run, but a great diving catch by the right fielder Jake McElroy of Holy Cross helped the Crusaders earn the series split in the second game of the day.
It was all Holy Cross early on, with the Crusaders scoring three runs in the first and second inning to take an early advantage.
Bucknell managed a response in the first, getting on the board when Voytovich doubled home Sherwin to open the scoring. However, the Crusaders added three more runs in the second to jump out to an early 6-1 advantage. The Crusaders then added what would be an important insurance run on a solo shot by by Angelo D'Acunto to take a 7-1 lead in the seventh.
The Bucknell offense scattered several hits through the middle innings, but couldn't plate any runs until the seventh, cutting the Holy Cross lead to three. Dunn continued his great day at the plate, sneaking a double down the left field line that scored Lyons and Sherwin, who each singled to start the frame. Lowery then added an RBI single to score Dunn for Bucknell's final run of the inning to pull the Bison within three, 7-4.
Bucknell chipped away at the lead in the eighth, when the Bison loaded the bases in the frame. Jake Wortman and Mason Kelly each singled to start the inning, the second hit of the game for the former, before another single from Sherwin helped load the bases. A fielder's choice from Voytovich scored Kelly to pull within 7-5, but the Crusaders managed to get a foul out to end the inning with the Bison threatening to do further damage.
Bucknell's last-gasp effort fell short in the ninth. Lowery delivered a promising start by doubling to lead off the inning, while Wortman walked to put the tying run on first base. An error in the infield by the Crusaders allowed Lowery to score to pull Bucknell within one, 7-6. However, a sharply hit ball to right field by the Bison was caught by diving Crusader right fielder Jake McElroy, preserving a one-run win for the Crusaders in game two.
Bucknell rapped out 13 hits, and left 14 runners on base in the defeat. Wortman, Sherwin, Voytovich, Lowery, and Kelly each had multiple hits, including a season-best three hits for Lowery to cap off a seven-hit weekend at the plate. The two hits for Wortman were also a season best.
The Bison will have a quick turnaround, hosting Mount St. Mary's on Tuesday for its final game of its ten-game homestand.
