Live stats will be available for all games this week.
The Bison will play the Leopards in Easton for two games on Saturday, before making the short trip to Bethlehem to square off against the Mountain Hawks on Sunday for a doubleheader.
Live stats will be available for all games this week.
- The Bison went 3-1 this past weekend, taking two games from Army and splitting Sunday against Holy Cross to improve to 6-2 in conference games this season. The 6-2 start is the best start for the program through eight games since 2014, in which the Bison started 7-1.
- The work of the Bison pitching staff was a large part of the success of this past weekend, as Bucknell starters Will Greer, Tyler O'Neill, and Austin Odell each earned wins. The trio of starters combined to pitch 22 of a possible 23 innings in the opening three games of the weekend.
- Greer tossed six innings, allowing eight hits and three earned runs with four strikeouts to improve to 3-0 on the season. Greer's ERA of 3.12 ranks second in the Patriot League to Lehigh's Luke Rettig, who ranks second in the nation in ERA at 0.26 through 35 innings. The junior ranks first in innings pitched in the league, and is tied for second in wins with teammate Odell with three.
- Odell pitched his second straight seven-inning complete game, earning his third win of the year. After battling injuries early on in his career, the senior has contributed three seven-inning victories, and has added 16 strikeouts to just nine walks in 27 innings pitched.
- Tyler O'Neill pitched his first-ever complete game in the second game of the series against the Black Knights, becoming the first Bison to accomplish the feat since Greer did it last year in a win over Lehigh. O'Neill scattered five hits and struck out a career-high five batters in the win, the first of his career in his first career start. The first-year has a 2.45 ERA through 18.1 IP this season.
- Andrew Funovits finished the job for Greer in the first game of the series, and continued his strong form after pitching a scoreless three innings in a relief outing against Saint Joseph's on Tuesday. Funovits struck out all three batters he faced in earning his first save of the season, and the sixth of his career. Funovits now moves into Bucknell's top ten list in terms of career saves, ranking eighth on the all-time list. Bucknell Hall-of-Famer Jason Buursma holds the career record at Bucknell with 15.
- Bucknell will take on The Mount for the second time this season, with the Mountaineers taking a 4-3 win in dramatic fashion in the two team's earlier matchup this season on March 16.
- Kyle Lyons opened the scoring for the Bison in that game, knocking a two-RBI double to right center that scored Henry Novicki and Mason Kelly. Kendall Pierson drew a bases-loaded walk to tie the game at three in the bottom of the ninth, but The Mount hit a home run to center field in the bottom of the tenth inning to take a one-run victory.
- Offensively, Brendan Lowery posted a solid week, posting eight hits and two doubles with five runs scored to raise his average to .318 this season. Lowery ranks tenth in the Patriot League in that category, and also ranks ninth in slugging percentage (.485) and OBP (.408). Anthony Sherwin (7th, .333) and Chris Cannizzaro (8th, .329) also rank in the top ten in the league in average.
- Sherwin continues to rank amongst the league leaders in several other categories. The sophomore ranks third in OBP (.449), sixth in hits (27), and second in doubles (9). Sherwin put together a run of five straight games with a double earlier this season.
- Pierson had a big offensive day in the win against Army, going 3-for-4 from the plate with four RBIs, including his first career home run at Depew Field inside the park. The senior has registered a career-best 15 hits already this season, and was a triple short of the cycle against the Black Knights in game two. The four RBIs are the most by a Bucknell player this season, along with Tyler Dunn's four-RBI day against Radford on February 25.
- Lyons made his debut in the leadoff spot against Holy Cross this weekend, putting together a hit in each game and also adding an RBI in game one. In game one against Army out of the nine spot, Lyons went 3-for-3 from the plate with two RBIs and a run scored.
- Tyler Dunn posted a solid five-game stretch over the week, hitting .462 over that time span and knocking in six RBIs. Dunn cleared the bases with a three-RBI triple against Holy Cross in game one, and followed that up on game later with a two-RBI double to help Bucknell start its rally. Dunn has now hit safely in six straight games.
- Grant Voytovich has put together a solid sophomore season for the Orange and Blue, and hit .368 in last week's contests. The native of Mars, Pa. put together seven hits over that time span, adding two RBIs and posting an on-base percentage of .421. Voytovich's 26 hits rank second on the team behind Sherwin, and ninth in the Patriot League.
- Mason Kelly also tied his career high in hits with two against the Crusaders in game two, also adding a hit in the first game of the series. The versatile Kelly has spent time at third base, right field, and left field over Bucknell's past five games.
- Bucknell went 1-2 against the Leopards last season after the final scheduled game of the season was canceled. In Bucknell's 13-8 win in Easton in what turned out to be the final game of the year, starting pitcher Chris DiFiore struck out a career-high 10 batters while the Bison offense rapped out 12 hits. The Bison scored nine straight runs beginning with a six-run third inning, highlighted by a home run from Pierson. Jacob Terwilliger also added two hits and two RBIs, while Jacob Corson also had two RBIs in that game.
- Bucknell and the Mountain Hawks met nine times last season, with Lehigh owning a 5-4 record in those games. Terwilliger posted solid numbers in those nine contests, hitting .409 with four doubles and four RBIs. Logan Kellerman posted six hits, a triple, and four RBIs in those matchups as well. Greer, in three outings against Lehigh last season, went 2-1 with 13 strikeouts and a 2.01 ERA over 22.1IP.
- Lafayette is off to a 3-1 start in Patriot League play after taking three of four from Lehigh to open its conference campaign. Justin Grech and Pete Ciuffreda are both hitting over .300 this season.
- Lehigh earned its lone win in the series opener against the Leopards, with Luke Rettig pitching a dominant performance in a 1-0 win as he improved to 5-1 with a 0.26 ERA. Riley Davis is hitting .351 this season, while 2021 Patriot League Player of the Year Casey Rother returns for his senior season in Bethlehem.
- After the weekend, the Bison will travel to Penn State on April 6 for a midweek contest before hosting Lafayette for three games in Lewisburg on April 9-10.
