Bucknell Baseball Splits Final Day of Navy Series
3/20/2022 6:15:00 PM | Baseball
LEWISBURG, Pa. – The Bucknell University baseball team split the final day of its four-game series against Navy, taking an 11-0 win in game three of the weekend, before falling 5-2 to the Mids in the series finale.
Bucknell (6-10, 3-1 PL) took three of four from the Mids over the weekend, and was bolstered by excellent play from its first two batters in Anthony Sherwin and Chris Cannizzaro, who hit .667 and .625, respectively.
Game One: Bucknell 11, Navy 0
Bucknell finished its regularly scheduled third game meant for Saturday afternoon on Sunday after the contest was suspended due to rain, picking up right where it left off in adding eight runs over the final two innings.
Bucknell took control of the game early on, taking a 3-0 lead in the first inning. Back-to-back singles to start the game from Sherwin and Cannizzaro put two runners on, before cleanup hitter Jacob Corson brought the pair home on an RBI double. Brendan Lowery then singled home Corson two batters later for Bucknell's third run of the inning.
That was all Bucknell would need in support of Ben Magovern, who rebounded from a tough outing against ACC opponent Pitt on Tuesday with five shutout innings on Saturday. Magovern retired five straight batters from the first to the third, and ended his day by stopping the Mids with two runners on in the top of the fifth by getting a fly out before the game was suspended due to rain.
The game resumed on Sunday afternoon, with the Bison finding their offensive groove almost immediately as two walks and a hit by pitch loaded the bases with no outs. Corson drew a walk with the bases loaded before Tyler Dunn used a sac fly to score Cannizzaro. Kendall Pierson drove in Bucknell's third and fourth runs of the inning on a triple that cleared the bases, the second of his career, to score Lowery and Grant Voytovich and take a 7-0 lead.
Bucknell put the game away for good in the bottom of the sixth, adding four more runs on five hits, including three straight to start the inning from Kyle Lyons, Sherwin, and Cannizzaro. Cannizzaro's double to left center scored both Lyons and Sherwin, while Voytovich then singled home Cannizzaro one batter later. Pierson then added his third RBI of the game on a single for Bucknell's final run of the inning.
Tyler O'Neill entered the game to start the sixth on Sunday and did not allow a baserunner in helping Bucknell earn its third victory of the series.
Sherwin and Cannizzaro went a combined 5-for-6 in the win, with three runs scored each. Corson went 1-for-3 on the day, tying his career best with three RBIs.
Game Two: Navy 5, Bucknell 2
The Bison couldn't overcome a strong first inning by the Mids, but were kept in the game by Renn Lints, who pitched a career-best 5.1 innings of relief after helping the Bison get out of an early jam in the first inning.
Bucknell loaded the bases in the bottom of the eighth down three, but two big strikeouts by Navy's Landon Kruer after entering the game helped Navy take the series finale and hang on for a 5-2 win.
The Mids started strong, taking a 3-0 lead in the first inning, capitalizing on three walks in the inning while adding three hits. Christian Policelli brought in two of those runs on an RBI triple, while a groundout by Colin Smith added Navy's third run. The Mids threatened to do even more damage after two walks and an infield single to load the bases, but Lints managed to get the final out after entering the game on a fly out to Voytovich in right field to end the threat.
Navy added runs in the third and the seventh to extend its lead to 5-0, the latter coming on a solo home run by Policelli to left field. Sherwin and Cannizzaro managed Bucknell's only two hits of the first four innings as Navy starter Reece Early kept the Bison off the board.
Lints was replaced in the seventh by Bryce Reimer, who settled in nicely after allowing Policelli's home run in the frame, retiring five straight batters.
The Bison pulled within three, 5-2, in the bottom of the seventh, as Cannizzaro doubled home Lyons before Voytovich followed that up with a double one batter later to score Cannizzaro for Bucknell's other run of the inning.
Bucknell nearly managed to come all the way back in the eighth inning, loading the bases with one out on walks by Tyler Dunn and Logan Kellerman, as well as a single to right field by Lowery. However, Kruer came up big for the Mids in getting two strikeouts to end the inning and the Bison threat.
Sherwin and Cannizzaro each added two more hits in the series finale, while Voytovich also collected two hits. The trio accounted for six of Bucknell's eight hits, with Dunn and Lowery providing Bucknell's other hits. Lints' 5.1 innings were a career-best by over 2.1 innings, only allowing the one run on the day.
Bucknell has a quick turnaround, hosting Saint Joseph's for a 3 p.m. first pitch on Tuesday before having another four-game weekend at Depew Field with doubleheaders against Army and Holy Cross.
