LEWISBURG, Pa. – The Bucknell University baseball team fell 18-2 to Saint Joseph's in midweek nonconference action on Tuesday afternoon at Depew Field.
Bucknell (6-11, 3-1 PL) could not overcome a fast start by the Hawks, who scored four runs in the first and three in the second to race out to a commanding 7-0 lead. The Hawks added runs in each of the final four innings, capitalizing on 18 walks by the Bison, to cruise to an 18-2 win.
Bucknell plated its first run of the game in the bottom of the fourth, when Grant Voytovich and Nic Adamo each singled. Kendall Pierson and Sean Keys were then hit by pitches in back-to-back at-bats to put the Bison on the board. The RBI by the first-year Keys was the first of his career.
Bucknell's other run of the day was scored by Voytovich, who hit another infield single to start the inning. After moving on a single by Tyler Dunn and a fly out by Kendall Pierson, Voytovich touched home after the Saint Joseph's pitcher was ruled to have committed a balk.
However, Saint Joe's proved too much offensively, rapping out 16 hits in addition to the 18 walks by the Bison pitching staff. Andrew Funovits provided a bright spot for the Bison out of the bullpen, allowing just two baserunners in three innings of work in relief of starter Nick Mulvey, who made his first career start for Bucknell along with Adamo. Nikhil Patel also made his collegiate debut for Bucknell, tossing one inning with a strikeout.
Voytovich finished with three hits, while Dunn also added two hits on the day.
Bucknell will now look ahead to four games this weekend as it returns to Patriot League play. The Bison host Army for a doubleheader on Saturday before Holy Cross heads to Lewisburg for another doubleheader on Sunday.
