LEWISBURG, Pa. – The Bucknell men's lacrosse team outlasted Penn State, 12-11, on Tuesday at Christy Mathewson-Memorial Stadium at the Pascucci Family Athletics Complex.
The Bison (6-1, 0-1 PL) held off a late flurry by the Nittany Lions (2-6, 0-0 B1G) to emerge victorious in the first contest between the Pennsylvania programs since 2013. It was a fast, physical game that saw Bucknell open up an 11-7 lead behind a 5-1 run that proved decisive despite Penn State closing the tilt on a 4-1 run of its own.
With the Bison clinging to a one-goal lead, Reid Delanois deflected a pass in the contest's dying seconds to prevent Penn State from getting another look on net. Earlier, with 1:26 left to play, Travis Talarico intercepted a pass to stall a promising Nittany Lion possession.
The Bucknell defense had a strong showing, holding Penn State without a goal for a 14:55 stretch that spanned from the third quarter's 11:42 mark to the final frame's 11:47 mark. Drew Wellington had a big game with seven ground balls and two caused turnovers while Frankie Higgins filled the stat sheet with two points (1g-1a), four ground balls and a caused turnover. In addition to his final-second heroics, Delanois posted a game-high three caused turnovers.
Rich O'Halloran, who took over in net early in the game, earned his first collegiate victory. The freshman stopped 10 shots, many from point-blank range. Nick Crovatto went 11-for-23 in the faceoff x and paced all players with nine ground balls; with his 11 faceoff wins, he surpassed 250 in his collegiate career.
Offensively, eight different Bison found the back of the net, with Alston Tarry leading the way with a hat trick. Harry Wellford and Connor Davis added two goals apiece, with Davis's total giving him 30 on the season.
After Penn State opened the third quarter's scoring, Crovatto won the resulting faceoff and found Dutch Furlong for a goal that gave Bucknell back its two-goal cushion. That strike also kicked off a 3-0 Bison run.
For the Nittany Lions, Jack Kelly netted a hat trick. Hudson Bohn went 14-for-26 in the x and collected seven ground balls while two different goalies combined to make 13 saves.
Bucknell held advantages in shots (45-40), shots on goal (25-22) and ground balls (41-34). The Bison thoroughly frustrated Penn State, with their aggressive play resulting in 25 turnovers. Three of the Nittany Lions' goals came on a man advantage, and they held a narrow edge in faceoffs (14-12).
The Bison next resume Patriot League play on Saturday with a 1 p.m. game at No. -/20 Loyola.
