LEWISBURG, Pa. – The Bucknell baseball team turned in a dominant game-two performance to gain a doubleheader split with Navy in Patriot League South Division action on Saturday at Depew Field. Freshman shortstop Anthony Sherwin hit his first collegiate homer and drove in five runs in support of Chris Difiore in Bucknell's 11-1 victory in the nightcap, after Navy's Charlie Connolly pitched a gem in Midshipmen's 7-1 win in the opener.
Bucknell improved to 5-8 overall and 5-4 in Patriot League play. Navy, which was playing for the first time in exactly one month after a long pause, is now 5-1 overall and 1-1 in the league.
The Bison and Midshipmen will meet again on Sunday for a single game in Annapolis at 2 p.m.
GAME 2: Bucknell 11, Navy 1 (7 innings)
After being limited to four hits in the opener, Bucknell pounded out 11 in the nightcap, including six for extra bases. Sherwin, hitting ninth in the order, was the offensive star. His first home run was a three-run blast over the wall in right-center, and it extended a narrow 3-1 lead up to 6-1 in the bottom of the fourth.
Sherwin later added a two-out, two-run double as part of a four-run fifth inning that blew the game open.
Bucknell got out to a great start, plating three first-inning runs against Navy righthander Tommy Goodridge (1-1), who had not been scored upon in eight innings coming into the game. Eunsang Yu's two-run triple up the right-center alley brought home a pair, and Henry Novicki followed with an RBI ground out.
Difiore (2-1) retired the side in order on just six pitches in the first inning, and then a couple of hits to start the second led to a Nico Valdez sacrifice fly. Difiore did well to escape further damage after an error behind him left two on with just one out.
The Bison lefthander had a strong outing, allowing just that run on six hits over six innings.
Jake Wortman got the fourth-inning rally started with a leadoff double off the wall in right field. Kyle Lyons laid down a perfect bunt that he beat out for a hit, and then Sherwin rocked Goodridge's first pitch over the wall in right.
Chris Cannizzaro and Jacob Corson added RBI knocks after Sherwin's fifth-inning double to make it a 10-1 game. Cannizzaro went 2-for-3 in the game and 4-for-6 on the day to raise his season batting average to a team-best .347.
Game two of the doubleheader was scheduled for nine innings, but the Bison ended it after seven when Peter Marren was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to make it a 10-run margin.
GAME 1: Navy 7, Bucknell 1
Navy ace Charlie Connolly was in control in game one, which was a scheduled seven-inning game. Connolly improved to 3-0 on the season after allowing just a run on four hits while striking out 10 over six innings.
Will Greer (2-1), who came in with a 1.00 ERA in three previous starts, labored through a 46-pitch first inning as Navy jumped out to a 3-0 lead. After Joe Simourian and Logan Keller opened with walks that chewed up a combined 19 pitches, Zach Stevens went to the opposite field for a three-run homer.
Navy added single runs in the second, third and fifth to go up 6-0 before the Bison got on the board in the bottom of the fifth. Jacob Terwilliger drew a one-out walk and came all the way around from first on Cannizzaro's double into the left-field corner.
Cannizzaro tallied two of Bucknell's four hits off Connolly, while Novicki and Kendall Pierson had one each.
Navy logged 11 hits, including two each from Keller, Stevens, Alex Smith and Zane Raba.
A bright spot for the Bison was the work out of the bullpen from lefty Luke Allain in his second appearance of the season. Allain entered with the bases loaded and no outs in the sixth and ended up retiring all six batters that he faced over two innings.
