RALEIGH, N.C. – Bucknell softball completed the first day of the Fairfield Crabtree Invitational with losses to Indiana and NC State. Bucknell's offense struggled through the first half of the day, and the defense had trouble slowing down the two Power Five opponents. With the losses, Bucknell dropped to 6-5 on the season.
Bucknell will have another shot at Indiana tomorrow when it takes on the Hoosiers at 10 a.m. The Bison will then face Saint Joseph's at 12:30 p.m.
Bucknell 4, NC State 9
Bucknell's second game of the day was a back-and-forth slugfest that saw seven of the 15 combined hits sail over the fence. A two-run homer by Halie Mariano in the top of the fifth inning gave the Bison a 3-2 lead in the game, but NC State tacked on seven runs during its last two trips to the plate that sealed the win.
NC State senior Sam Sack hit two of the Wolfpack's four home runs and finished the game with three RBIs. Taylor Wolfgang and Nicole Rivait had the other two homers for Bucknell, and Rivait's gave the Bison the first lead of the game in the top of the second inning.
Raeanne Geffert was credited with the loss after coming in for Kaiya Burton in the fifth inning. Burton, who was making her second start of the season, finished with seven strikeouts and four earned runs. Geffert struck out three while allowing five to score.
Bucknell's one hit that did not leave the stadium was a successful bunt attempt by Allyse Volpe in the top of the third.
Bucknell 0, Indiana 13
Bucknell failed to find a rhythm on offense in Friday's first game. The Bison finished without a hit and only managed to get two on base with walks in the first inning. Meanwhile, the Hoosiers hung 13 on the board with 12 hits.
The game went scoreless through the first inning, but the Hoosiers broke it open with four runs in the second. They'd go on to add three runs in the third and six in the fourth, ending the game in five innings.
It was the second no-hitter in the career of Indiana's starting pitcher Emily Goodwin, who finished the game with seven strikeouts. Geffert tossed four strikeouts before being replaced by Lauren Lichtenwalner in the third inning.
