RALEIGH, N.C. – Bucknell softball led in both of its games played at the Fairfield Crabtree Invitational on Saturday, but fell to 0-4 on the weekend with losses to Indiana and Saint Joseph's. Sophomore Nicole Rivait finished the day 3-for-7 with four RBIs and a pair of home runs.
Bucknell has one game still to play in Raleigh when it faces invitational host NC State on Sunday. Bucknell fell 9-4 to the Wolfpack on Friday, but the team hit three home runs in the game. First pitch is scheduled for 12:30 p.m. tomorrow.
Bucknell 2, Saint Joseph's 6
Bucknell led 2-0 through much of the afternoon game, but Saint Joseph's scored six runs in the final two innings to hand the Bison their fourth loss of the weekend. The Hawks recorded six of their nine hits during the fifth and sixth innings and took over the lead after the Bison committed a pair of errors with no outs in the bottom of the fifth.
Saint Joseph's added another run off of a homer in the sixth, but it wouldn't be needed as Bucknell was unable to string together hits down the stretch.
Bucknell had initially taken the lead after Chase Knapp hit a triple in the second inning, then scored on a fielder's choice. The Bison added another run in the third when Rivait hit her second home run of the day and third of the weekend.
Raeanne Geffert was given the loss after going 5.1 innings and striking out five. Three of the six Saint Joseph's runs were earned. Bucknell finished the game with five hits, three of which went for extra bases.
Bucknell 3, Indiana 8 (8 innings)
Bucknell held a lead through five innings of the first game on Saturday, but Indiana tied things up in the top of the sixth and went on to score five runs in the extra inning.
Rivait hit a three-run home run in the bottom of the first that put the Bison up 3-1 on the Hoosiers, but they were the only three runs the Bison would score in the game.
With freshman Kaiya Burton in the circle, the Hoosiers went scoreless for three innings after getting on the board in the first. They finally sent another one across on a sacrifice fly in the top of the fifth, then tied the game with an infield single in the sixth.
Geffert came in to replace Burton, and the next five Indiana batters went down in order to send the game to extra innings. Indiana scored five runs in the top of the eighth from two home runs, and the Bison were unable to match.
Geffert was credited with the loss, but earned just one of Indiana's five runs scored in the final inning. Bucknell posted three hits in the loss after failing to make successful contact against the Hoosiers yesterday.
