2/1/2020 1:04:00 PM | Men's Lacrosse
DURHAM, N.C. – The Bucknell men's lacrosse team raced out to a 10-1 lead in the first half and never looked back in a 16-9 victory over Furman in the season opener for both teams on Saturday at Duke's Koskinen Stadium.
Will Yorke netted all five of his goals in the first half to help the Bison build their advantage, which proved too great for the Paladins to overcome. Alston Tarry (2g-4a), Harry Wellford (3g), Tommy Sopko (2g) and Matt Fedorjaka (1g-1a) also had multi-point outings for Bucknell, with Wellford's hat trick representing the first goals of his collegiate career.
Nick Crovatto's performance in the x helped the Bison get off to their strong start. The sophomore, who is in his first season as Bucknell's primary faceoff specialist, won 10 of 13 faceoffs (.769) in the first half; he finished the game as the winner of 18 of 27 (.667). In addition, Crovatto collected 12 ground balls, two shy of the school standard set by Jarett Witzal last year against Army West Point.
Wellford got the offensive onslaught started with his first career goal at the first quarter's 9:06 mark; by the end of the first frame, the Bison held a 7-1 lead, bolstered by four Yorke tallies. Bucknell then scored three unanswered goals in the second quarter to take a 10-1 advantage into the locker room.
Ben Clark earned the win in net, making six saves. Travis Talarico (5), Yorke (5) and Conor Shears (4) all collected at least four ground balls while Hunter Newman (3) and Talarico (2) caused multiple turnovers.
For Furman, Anders Erickson (1g-3a) and Carson Sorrells (2g-1a) each reached the three-point plateau while Alec Van de Bovenkamp, a two-time all-SoCon selection, made 18 saves.
Will O'Grady matched Newman for the game-high total in caused turnovers (3); he also paced the Paladins with four ground balls. Furman sent four players to the faceoff x, with none posting a winning percentage over .500 against Crovatto.
The Bison held sizable advantages in shots (55-28), shots on goal (34-16) and ground balls (42-24); they also went 15-for-16 on their clears compared to the Paladins' 19-for-26 performance.
This was the first meeting between Bucknell and Furman. The Bison next travel to Bryant for a 12 p.m. game on Sunday, Feb. 9.
