SMITHFIELD, R.I. – The Bucknell men's lacrosse team used a second half rally to edge Bryant, 11-9, on Sunday at Beirne Stadium.
The Bison (2-0, 0-0 PL) outscored the Bulldogs (0-1, 0-0 NEC) by an 8-3 margin in the second half to overcome a slow start and emerge victorious. Freshman Harry Wellford led the attack, accounting for four of those eight goals, while Alston Tarry netted what proved to be the game-winning goal off a feed from Nick Clarke, who later added the insurance tally with less than three minutes left to play.
In net, Ben Clark was sensational, making 17 saves to hold Bryant in the single digits in strikes. The junior's previous career high in saves was eight, set in 2018 at Bryant.
The Bulldogs carried a 6-3 lead into the intermission, notably holding Bucknell without a goal until the first quarter's 42-second mark. The Bison came out of the break hot, with Wellford netting two goals in less than a minute to cut Bryant's lead to 6-5 early in the third quarter.
After the Bulldogs made it a 7-5 game at the third quarter's 8:28 mark, Bucknell responded with four unanswered goals to take a 9-7 lead with 11:15 on the clock in the fourth quarter. During that stretch, Wellford and Tommy Sopko each struck twice.
While Bryant twice pulled back within a single goal, the Bison answered each time. Tarry's game-winning goal extended Bucknell's lead to 10-8 with 3:51 remaining; less than a minute after the Bulldogs made it a 10-9 game, Clarke found the back of the net to bring the final score to 11-9 with 2:23 on the clock.
Clark made four saves in the fourth quarter, including denying Jake Buonaiuto with eight seconds remaining to ice the game.
Sopko and Matthew Barkauskas each netted two goals; Sopko's 15 shots matched Bucknell's school record, held by Chris Cara and Sean O'Brien.
Nick Crovatto went 13-for-24 in the faceoff x and collected eight ground balls. In addition to his key goal and assist, Clarke logged five ground balls. Conor Shears caused a team-best two turnovers.
For Bryant, Buonaiuto registered five points (4g-1a) while Luke Caracciolo made 15 saves in a losing effort.
The Bison finished the game with slim advantages in shots (43-41) and ground balls (34-26); the teams were even, 26-26, in shots on goal and each only failed on one clearing attempt.
Bucknell next hosts Sacred Heart for its home opener on Saturday, Feb. 15 at 12 p.m.
