UNIVERSITY PARK – Bucknell split a non-conference doubleheader at Penn State on Wednesday night at Beard Field, winning the first game 4-2 before dropping the second contest 9-8.
The Bison head back to Lewisburg with a 26-18 overall record, while Penn State's record moved to 23-26. Including a doubleheader sweep last season, the Bison have won three of the last four games in the series with the Nittany Lions.
Freshman Nicole Rivait went 6-for-7 in the doubleheader, while Lauren Hadley had four hits. Hadley is now 13 hits shy of setting Bucknell's career record with at least seven games remaining in the season.
Bucknell will play another non-conference doubleheader when it travels to take on Saint Francis on Saturday at 1 p.m.
Game 1 -- Bucknell 4, Penn State 2
Hadley hit a clutch game-tying home run in the top of the sixth inning to help Bucknell rally for a 4-2 win over Penn State in the first game of the doubleheader.
Penn State led 2-0 after scoring both of its runs in the third inning, before Bucknell cut the deficit in half with a run in the fifth. Halie Mariano led off with a triple and scored on a bunt by Ryanne Rokos.
Hadley's sixth home run of the season led off the sixth inning and tied the game at 2-2. Going against Penn State's top pitcher, she fell behind 0-2 before going the opposite way for the solo shot.
That homer set the stage for the Bison to score the eventual winning run in the seventh inning. Rivait, who went 3-for-3 in the game, got things going with a single and moved to third on a wild pitch and a passed ball. The bunt came in handy again as Rivait scored the go-ahead run on a sacrifice by Marisa Alemany.
Penn State attempted to get the runner at home on Alemany's bunt. Rivait would have been safe regardless, but the pitcher's throw home went wide and allowed Alemany to advance all the way to second. She then scored an insurance run on another error by the Nittany Lions.
Lauren Lichtenwalner continued her outstanding stretch of play, improving to 11-5 on the season with a complete-game outing. She gave up two earned runs on five hits and two walks while striking out a pair of batters. Over her last eight appearances, seven of which she started, Lichtenwalner is 5-0 with 0.70 ERA while giving up just four earned runs in 40.0 innings.
Game 2 – Penn State 9, Bucknell 8
Bucknell's five through nine hitters in the lineup combined to go 9-for-17, but Penn State's bats did just enough to out-perform the Bison's as the Nittany Lions won 9-8 in the second game of the night.
The Bison finished with 14 hits and six stolen bases. Thirteen of the hits were singles, with Hadley tripling for the lone extra-base hit. Hadley and Rivait led a solid offensive performance, both going 3-for-4. Mariano and Rokos had two hits apiece, while Anna Gimmestad, Julienne Egofske, Jess Hom, and Tara Baglivo had one hit apiece.
It was a back-and-forth game as Bucknell led by as many as three runs and Penn State had a two-run lead at one point. The Bison went up 5-2 on an RBI triple by Hadley that scored Baglivo in the top of the fourth inning.
Fueled by home runs from Destiny Weber, Toni Polk, and Chelsea Bisi, Penn State scored six runs over the fourth and fifth innings to take an 8-6 lead.
Down to their final three outs, Bucknell rallied to tie the game. Nicole Rivait had the key hit, driving in Hom and Bella DeRiso with a one-out, two-run single. DeRiso was running for Egofske, who started the rally with a pinch-hit single.
Penn State avoided extra innings on its home field thanks to an RBI single by Meghan Williams in the bottom of the seventh. The run was unearned due to a Bucknell error, which would have been the second out and resulted with Penn State have just one runner on at first base.
Errors have proven costly for Bucknell as of late. The Bison have given up five unearned runs over the past three games.
