Baseball Goes 1-1 at Holy Cross on Sunday

Game One: Bucknell 8, Holy Cross 4
Bucknell raced out to a 6-0 lead through the first five innings on a two-RBI double from Miles Moore and a Will Gannon home run to support Jeff Gottesman's season-high eight strikeout game in an 8-4 win in game one.
Bucknell scored two runs in the top of the first after Jack Schuler used a nine-pitch at-bat before drawing a leadoff walk. Luke Hartman then singled through the right side to move Schuler to third, before Miles Moore ripped a double down the left field line to bring the two runners home for a 2-0 Bucknell lead.
The Bison added three more runs in the fourth, beginning with Will Gannon's home run to right field on a 3-2 pitch with one out. Ben Smith then walked before Caleb Broughton singled to put runners on first and second for Bucknell with one down.
After Smith advanced to third on a fly out and Broughton stole second, the two were brought home on a fielding error at short for Holy Cross for two more insurance runs and a 5-0 lead after four.
Bucknell added another run in the fifth when Dominic Toso, who finished 3-for-4 at the plate, led off the inning with a triple. After an Evan Madigan walk, the two pulled off a double steal where Toso touched home and Madigan successfully stole second for the Bison's sixth run.
The Crusaders pulled two runs back in the sixth after two consecutive RBI singles.
However, Bucknell responded with two runs in the top of the seventh after Hartman was hit by a pitch before being replaced by Jared Drizin as a runner.
Toso then rapped a double down the left field line for Bucknell's seventh run of the game that scored Drizin from first. Moore moved Toso to third on a single to center, before Toso was brought home on an RBI ground out by Madigan.
Gottesman, who cruised through the first five innings while allowing just two hits, received a bit of a scare from the Crusaders in the seventh, after Holy Cross scored a run on an RBI double with no outs before he settled in and garnered two consecutive fly outs. Brenden Tuttle came in to get the final out after an RBI double from the Crusaders in the next at bat, and struck out the final Holy Cross batter in four pitches to help the Bison earn their second consecutive conference win over the weekend.
Bucknell finished with eight hits to the Crusader's seven. Gottesman pitched 6.2 innings while striking out a season-high eight batters for his second win of the season after throwing 113 pitches.
Toso finished with a big game at the plate, finishing with three hits, two runs scored, and an RBI. Moore collected two hits and two RBIs, while Madigan and Gannon each had an RBI.
Game Two: Holy Cross 6, Bucknell 5
Holy Cross rallied from a 4-0 deficit with four runs in the fifth and two in the sixth to hang on for a come-from-behind 6-5 win over Bucknell in game two.
Bucknell started game two with another early lead after scoring three runs in unconventional ways, all of which were unearned. Alex Baumann led the inning off with a double before stealing third.
An error by the Crusaders allowed Chris Cannizzaro to reach and Baumann to score for the Bison's first run.
Madigan then doubled down the left field line to move Cannizzaro to third, before a passed ball by the Crusaders allowed Cannizzaro to score from third.
Three walks by the Crusaders helped score another run for Bucknell, with Hartman earning the RBI after drawing the bases loaded walk that scored Madigan.
The Bison added an insurance run in the top of the fourth after Caleb Broughton singled to the pitcher before a walk from Schuler moved him to second.
Hartman drove in another RBI, singling in Broughton before being thrown out trying to stretch the hit into a double.
Holy Cross battled back in the bottom of the fifth, scoring three runs, all with two outs, to cut into the Bison lead. After an RBI single, the Crusaders used a bases loaded walk and a single to the pitcher to add the other two runs and reduce their deficit to 4-3.
Holy Cross took the lead for good in the bottom of the sixth, scoring a run on an RBI single before a walk and a hit by pitch with the bases loaded helped the Crusaders take a 6-4 lead.
Bucknell halved the Holy Cross advantage in the top of the eighth. Broughton began the proceedings with a walk, before pinch hitter JohnPaul Bell singled up the middle on an 0-2 count to advance Broughton to second. Jack Schuler then singled home Broughton on a 3-0 pitch to score the Bison's final run of the game after a groundout ended the Bison rally for the inning.
The Bison drew a leadoff walk in the ninth, but a successful pick off by the Holy Cross pitcher and two consecutive strikeouts ended the Bison threat in the inning as Bucknell settled for a road split.
Hartman finished with two RBIs, while Moore picked up two more hits in game two. Brenden Tuttle (0-1) took the loss on the mound for the Bison.
Bucknell will play a midweek game at Villanova on Tuesday before continuing conference play with three games at home vs. Army over the weekend.
